Korea really is not a violent place.. very mellow.. almost no drugs, almost nothing.
I got jumped badly in Venezuela.. and went to the police station in a small town.. and heard there were 17 car jackings (robbed by gunpoint) over that same weekend.. just a small town.. and I was one of the many that probably just got jumped.. but I didn't have a car.. just me walking.. so who knows how many others got it..
Who knows how much happens in the USA?? Even in small little towns there seems to be a few fights and such..
Korea with 48 million people is extremely mild in comparison.. not even compareable actually.. there are no guns, no drugs.. genearlly almost no problem.. |

CoffeeCup,
some advice for you to "feel safe" here in Korea.
1) Bring a machinegun and dig a foxhole in front of your appartement complex. Then, hire some G.I.'s that have leave time coming to man the gun emplacement and "shoot any and all people that look "suspicious".
2) Weld your door shut everynight...its more work but you will feel "safer".
3) Hire the same G.I.'s to dig a tunnel from the foxhole to your school. This way you will travel underground at all times and never run the risk of encountering any of those "dangerous Koreans".
4) Make sure to hire a couple of body guards if you have to go to the store..cause ya never know.
These tips should go a long way to make you feel safer in the very dangerous place that is Korea...
Also don't be shocked if on arrival you find that Korea is populated by many Koreans. |

if you have the resources, may i recommend getting a sword that fits into the cane of a stylish (and practical) umbrella?

| I certainly don't feel unsafe where I'm living. and until recently I would have said that I didn't feel unsafe anywhere in Korea. However, the recent rash of attacks, whether metaphorical or real, in Itaewon, has given me pause. There was a time when a weekend in Itaewon was just the tonic for living up-country; hit the Big Kimchi, browse the used-bookstore, stock up on rare and overpriced cheese, jalapenos and salsa at the Red Door, polish off the best cheeseburger in the republic at the Nashville, and take your chances as night falls. It sounds (if accounts from this board can be credited) as if those innocent days are gone forever. Say it isn't so! |

| I went to Itaewon tonight from 11pm-7am.. not much happened but I got really really drunk and stumbled around alot.. that was kind of fun.. but at the end of the night I'm sitting at home 8am posting online.. so i keep wondering if it was all really worth it? |

Yes, CC, to an angry drunk who's standing on the corner shouting at passers-by, "snapping" will often be percieved as an invitation to rumble. This is true in Korea, Canada, and I'd reckon a lot of other places in the world. If you don't yet have the "street smarts" to keep your mouth shut in such situations, I suggest you avoid Korea. For that matter, you should probably avoid visiting most urban environments in countries which allow the consumption of alcohol.
re: the poll. Yes, I feel a very safe in Korea. |

You'll notice, I hope, that I didn't at any time imply you were psycho. But if you do "snap" back, even just verbally at a group of drunken Koreans who are wanting to bait you, then you're digging your own grave. I don't care if you're Mike Tyson, if you follow this board you'll know there is no winning in a physical confrontation with a Korean in Korea. It only goes one of two ways, either he ( usually they ) kick your ass, or you kick thier ass and then the cops kick your ass, no matter what. In fact, sometimes it can even go that they kick your ass, then the cops kick it again. I'm sure you've worked this out from the board. And as I said, it will be exactly this lack of restraint that makes Korea dangerous for you. If you have some control, some cool, and some streetsmarts, it can be safer than anywhere you've been. |

This has been driving me nuts! Who was it that had a sword in their umbrella? Was it that guy from the Avengers? Some James Bond villian? I'd like to know what you are referring to! |
