Yes, a very good acquaintance told me on Monday evening that a Canadian guy was pissed off at a door man at Twilight Zone in I'taewon and proceeded to give him the finger and a piece of his rage-filled mind. Stung by the guy's words and middle finger waving, the guy got two other security guys and some clubs and stomped the guy badly. My acquaintance further alledges that the three guys smiled during the assault and looked " quite pleased with themselves for attacking a white guy". The police supposedly watched the vicious assault from across the street and ignored pleas from on-lookers to stop the very bloody assault.
Anyway, has anybody else heard this story before?

Secondly, the bartender at Helios admitted to me on Wednesday night that though the Irish were "slow in leaving the bar", the security attacked the group for no good reason outside on a public street.

In general, in my experience, Twilight Zone is one of the bloodiest on-edge bars in all of Korea.. with 24-hour drinking policy.. things can can pretty ugly.. I've been in there a few times.. and one time came up the stairs and saw ALOT of blood all over the floor.

Generally, its a place where alot of Korean men, Russian men, and African men converge and compete for Russian girls going in and out. I have seldom heard of English Teachers lingering around that place.. things get pretty ugly there on a regular basis.

Why would the English teacher be giving people the bird there anyhow? Thats insane. In that place you need to give off NO bad vibes to anyone whatsoever.. thats the rule of the game there..

You mean he didn't have the all-powerful flag of protection on his backpack or jacket? That would've saved him for sure!

I don't know that one. Sounds like a hole. What is going on in that area? Sounds like a good reason to stay out of Itaewon.

Its that place directly across 7-11.. go up the stairs to the top. I've been up there about a half-dozen times.. but anytime I go, its because I get dragged out there and every other bar in Itaewon has closed for the night. Its also best if you are hanging around a few African guys or something.. or military guys or something.. I wouldn't go in there with a couple English teachers..

If you linger around long enough you'll get funneled into that one around 7-8am.. next thing that opens is 10am at Seoul Pub. Its draw card is its open all the time. Never closes.

It has big signs as you go up there stairs advertising that its 24 hours a day. Generally, there are always Russian women just hanging out on their off time or something or another.. and usually dancing.. or drinking.. or both.

It attracts a weird element of pyscho aggressive Korean guy that doesn't care.. combined with african guys.. and then the Russian guys.. the combination of the 3 is just as interesting as you can imagine.. particularly when they are all enticed by the Russian girls. Occassionally a really psycho Korean girl is attracted to the element as well.

Definetely not the kind of place you want to being calling people names and giving them the finger/bird. As soon as you walk through the entrance, you can feel people sizing you up.. (and I'm not that big).. and I don't look for fights.. and its something I don't regularly feel.. so that says something as well..

All the stories I've heard lately about foreigners getting their asses handed to them in the Twan started with the "victim" acting like beligerent jackasses (I even heard a version of the original Irish story where this was the case, but of course who knows..). Sure, the cops should've stopped it no matter what if they were there, but if you go around yelling at people and flipping them off and get whooped you don't have anything to complain about as far as I'm concerned. Wave of violence against foreigners in Itaewon? Sounds a bit more like a wave of cretins that were asking for it.

I think that Itaewon is a cess pit. I always felt insecure on the several times I have visited. Its the politics, cultural differences and copious amounts of alcohol that make it a dangerous place to go. I agree with the previous poster to the extent that anyone giving insults to the door men is suicidal. The guys on the doors at the UN bar just give me the creeps. Certainly wouldn't be giving them the finger.

Of course you don't give anyone the finger when you're out at night unless you actually LIKE fighting and are pretty good at it. BUT, that doesn't mean the cops weren't highly negligent in thier approach. It should not matter who started it, the cops are there to protect everyone. Just another example of the profound racism that permeates this cro-magnon backwater.

Korean cops seem to be infamous for not getting involved in incidents involving Koreans. Thus they can't be expected to make exceptions for foreigners who (in Itaewon) outnumber and outweigh them by a significant margin. They likely figure that the law of the jungle will suffice and they should simply be around to pick up the pieces and make a report. I imagine if they tried to get involved in breaking up every Itaewon fight they'd quit the force within a week.

Wrong. They will break up a Korean/Korean fight without hesitation. It's when there is a foreigner involved and the foreigner is getting pulped that they won't act. If the foreigner is doing the pulping, dollars to donuts they step in with full force.

Not in my experience. I can't count the number of times I've personally seen Korean cops standing by while two Koreans go at each other. At best they try to gently push them away but I never see the cuffs come out. Even seen it right outside a police station. Just watch one of the police documentaries that pop up from time to time on KBS/MBC/SBS etc. Same again.

But my eyes could be deceiving me... Rolling Eyes
