Plans are life's house of cards. The second it starts to blow hard, you need to get new plans.

And I still see Japan as the best of my options at this point.

The Korea/Japan debate has been talked about a multitude of times. But its rather simplistic that 'good' teachers go to Japan and 'bad' teachers go to Korea.

Actually, I'm reading your second paragraph and now I'm a little lost how that relates to the first paragraph.. and the third paragraphs confuses me a bit more..

I think you don't know how to read. The paragraphs have transitions, if you do know how.

And is it 'rather simplistic' to debate this? It's simplistic to not think so, gathering that I've gone on job interviews in Japan and back in the States to teach ESL in Japan that have used tests in their job application process to check your grammar; have asked for at least three references; have asked for your work history back home; and have basically asked for higher qualifications, such as the ubiquitous 'TESOL' certificate, a certificate Koreans totally disregard.

It's simplistic. I guess that's why we're here.

Needless to say, yeah, maybe I am and wasn't as learned as some of the select few back there in my Tokyo days when I did apply for a job in Japan. That was about ten years ago. I suppose my grammar and English proficiency skills weren't that great either compared to some folks. This made me wonder about my prospects of teaching period.

But I've been at it five years now in Korea and it makes me wonder if something wasn't wrong with the Japanese. I mean their hiring tactics and their superiority complexes, both which are notorious. I'd like to give it a shot there again, but now I'm too old, an aspect which of course, is also a black mark in getting hired there.

The Japanese are more academically self-conscious when it comes to hiring English teachers, I guess. They do think that the better the University, degree, proficiency in the English language, looks, etc., the wiser is their choice in hiring you. Not like Korea. But does a degree count alone?

I've found that creativity and inventiveness are the two keys for teaching ESL here in Korea. You are your best resource, not a college degree or TESOL certificate. Altough these accomplishments can rate your intelligence, many English teachers are flat out dullards and dunces when it comes to getting anything out of the students. Sure, class preparation and knowledge help, but ESL requires something more.

Yet my general conclusion is that the Japanese are more thorough and accurate in choosing their teachers and that in so doing, they really think they will learn English better. Is this true? Should English teachers be more qualified, or are those in Japan more qualified at teaching? It makes me wonder. But perhaps this is just too simplistic.

What are you basing that on 3DN???

I'm basing this on facts taking by an annual English Proficiency Test each country is forced to take yearly. Didn't you know that? 'Exam hell,' as it's called. Puts Korea on a higher footing than Japan. But not only in grammar and what not. It also included speaking.

Read this in the Herald many years ago. Or perhaps read it somewhere else. Koreans are better at English than the Japanese.
