|
|
Hi,
I work at public school, not with SMOE or any program, privately hired. I want to have a contract only through the remaining school year--ending in February 2008. My question is this:
Can public schools make a less-than-1 year contract? My contract is finished in July. Is there any immigration rule on length of visa? Thank you. |

Are you working their now and want to extend for six months? If so, that should be possible with some negotiation.
If you want to sign a contract with a new school for only six months, that can be difficult. You MIGHT Find someone to do it, but at a public school its unlikely.

My friend here only wanted to extent for 6 months at a public school and basically they said no, it was a year or nothing. the education board in this province just wouldn't budge.
So she has signed and will give notice 5 months into her contract....she has warned the school she will only be staying 6 months and they seem Ok, perhaps hoping she will stay the year... |

Yes. I am working there now, and I want to extend. Yes, it is a public school, but I am a private hire, not a part of SMOE, Gepik or the like.
I suppose I could do what the above poster has seen--just sign for a year and give my notice at 5 months. But the school has been very good to me, and if I did give notice, I am worried about not getting an LOR, as I have the line in my contract (just like SMOE) that they will not issue LOR. |

I just extended my non-EPIK/SMOE public school job for 6 months (total 1.5years). Have you asked if thats OK? They wanted a year at first, but I basically told them that I simply couldn't do that. We agreed in the end, and its all settled now. |

Look into the possibility of getting a post-dated LOR (for when you want to leave) as a condition of you extending. If they are not willing to do that...that should raise a red flag. |

Great. I'm sure my school will agree. I was more worried that there would be some Immigration Law preventing it. Thanks. |

Extending is up to the school. Its the initial conract that must be a year. |

With the date that you are looking at finishing being the end of the school year, you may have success in extending to for that amount of time .. because they can then get someone new to start the new school year ...
It doesn't hurt to try.
