I am an independent person, and I like traveling alone. Where have you found are the best/easiest places to travel alone, both in terms of cost and safety? I'm looking for a good week-long destination, and something possibly longer term for my end of the contract/waste away my bonus money trip.

I have lots of places that I want to travel to, but I'm having problems narrowing things down. I can really only afford the two trips, and so I'd like to make them as rewarding as possible. I'm not particularly interested in Japan, I'd like to do something "different."

I know how you feel here, but honestly, whatever you end up doing, I can almost guarantee it won't be "different". You will do something you think is different and then see 8 billion other tourists while you are there.

However, if you really want to do something different, go to North Korea. Other slightly, possibly, well at least a little different things are, go to Mongolia, go to the Maldives, hit some island in the 'Nesias (Mirco, or Poly), or go to Thailand (just kidding).

Places that are good to go travel alone are, in my opinion, the most travelled places. Places that are safe to travel to, would be Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and probably lots of other places.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but I was actually trying to help you out here, I just think it is a little hard to really fit your criteria for what you want.

1 week - city state like Hong kong or Singapore. I didn't personally care for Singapore as I thought it was too santized and dull. Never been to Hong Kong.

More than a week - Laos. Laid back people, cheap as chips, safe place, awesome food, absence of f*wit foreigners if you stay well clear of Vang Vieng.

Did Laos last year on my own, loved it. Lots of neat people to hang out and get a beer with in Luang Prabang. Everything CLG said is dead on

Love HK but never did it on my own.

This year Myanmar and Malaysia on my own, wife is going back to the states to see her mother so I'M FREE FOR A MONTH!!!!! Wink

I went to the Philippine island of Boracay alone, and LOVED it. The people are so nice and fantastic, and it's cheap. The only drawback is that lodging is not as cheap as Thailand or Bali but still cheap overall.

I've been to Hong Kong six times but I wouldn't spend a week there. Singapore was also good but I wouldn't spend a week there, either.

You should first ask yourself what you like: nightlife, sightseeing, shopping and the like. Then see which places are best for each of the traits you need.
