Part of his jawbone was removed, and two replacement operations have failed, he said. He is awaiting a third operation.
Ebert, 64, also had a tracheotomy that left him unable to speak. |
Ever see an interview with one of those kids that blew his jaw off with a shotgun after listening to Judas Priest? A couple decades ago a couple teenage guys were listening to JP and decided to kill themselves. One survived but had no jaw left. I saw a TV interview with the guy. Horrifying. I seem to recall he grew a mustache and kind of combed it under his upper jaw. He's actually dead now. OD'd on his pain killers. I don't know what he was listening to then. |

Great guy, with the right spirit:

He said people had urged him not to attend because the paparazzi would take unflattering photos and gossip columns would dish up mean-spirited comments about him.
"When I turn up in Urbana, I will be wearing a gauze bandage around my neck, and my mouth will be seen to droop. So it goes," Ebert wrote.
"We spend too much time hiding illness. There is an assumption that I must always look the same. I hope to look better than I look now. But I'm not going to miss my festival," he added. |
I hope the new surgery is successful and that he gets well soon. |

I hope he gets better, and wish him all the best.
Even when I disagree with his reviews (such as when he savaged "Lord of the Rings," yet later gave a positive review to "Revenge of the Sith"), I always felt he had something interesting to say. |
