1. Saunas

2. Lack of "last call"

3. complete ban on guns

4. a calming of PCness. Not quite to the Korean level, but definitely a cooling of the "be careful of what you say".

5. Arirang. Cuz every country needs a gov't sponsored broadcaster telling them they can do no wrong, that all they produce is perfection and the envy of the world, and that they have a strength, aura, fighting spirit, determination, and purity that no other country can match.

(psst... I was kinda joking about one of the 5. Can you guess which one?)

Dude, sales tax is there but included in the price displayed. Kitchen scissors are being used in west for ages for food preparation, especially birds. Medical care is cheap in Korea due to government subsidy & mandatory government health insurance. Available in many western countries with similar mandatory health insurance ran by government - same as in Korea.

Scissors for cutting meat.......still blows me away. Utterly simplistic but, at the same time, genius. Why the heck did no one in the West ever think of doing that?

They did...buy any cheapo Wal-mart knife kitchen set and you'll get them or go expensive and buy brand-names from Solingen.

But I do not see a benefit of using scissors in cutting meat for preparation in the kitchen. Of course, grilling on the table scissors are easier and for cutting/carving up chicken/turkey before putting it on a serving plate.

Also because Korean doctors don't screw around they get the job done fast. I think in a lot of western clinics there's a certain amount of time they have to spend with a patient who visits them no matter what. When I had sinusitis I was often in and out in under half an hour which was great. I imagine that the speed results in some careless screw-ups but for me its definately worth the MASSIVE reduction in price.

Another thing that keeps American prices up is how the phramacutical industry works. My cousin's ENTIRE job is offering doctors various freebies if they perscribe enough of the new expensive medication and calling them up and complaining if they don't sell enough of the expensive new stuff and perscribe cheaper generic stuff instead. Her entire job is doing everything she can to drive up the cost of medical care. A bit horrifying.

As for the list (some of these already exist to some extent in the states, but not enough)

1. Ondol heating.
2. Grills at your table so the food never gets cold.
3. Waiter-summoning buttons.
4. Subway systems that don't suck.
5. 24 fried chicken and beer delivery.

IN the west it is called in floor radiant hetaing and it is evry popular in new home construction as it eliminates exposed radiators. It is more expensive and usually requires a concrete floor (hence why it didn't catch on in the west for some time). But yes you're right it rocks!

As for the waiter summoning button you know in the West she would take that button and jam it up....

How about Korean-style waiters then? They come when you want them, they don't bother you when you don't want them and you don't have to tip them.

Oh yeah, add that to the list. I can't believe how much I paid annoying incompetents in tips back home.

And also hunderds of unecessary tests American doctors do just to cover their back in case of malpractice lawsuit. In government ran health care, they do necessary tests and if things do not get well, they do more. You don't have to do bloodwork for a flu or X-ray! But if it persists for 1-2 weeks then maybe you should. US doctors do not think like that and also fault is in patients - they sue for nothing, so better be safe than sorry if you are a MD.
In Philly, there is a lack of doctors because malpractice insurance is about 1 mil USD a year.
In Korea, you can do jack shit to the doc as well as in some european countries and thus health care is more reasonable.
