To those US soldiers/personell serving in Seoul I salute you!

I am a US Expat "civilian" seeking access and purchasing privileges on Base. My goal is to find a legal yet unconventional means without compromising your status.

Willing to provide generous/discretionary compensation for access.

PM me anytime

Thanks again to all those who are serving!

You can go on base, providing that the person is willing to escort you on base.
As for getting into the PX/commissary, you need a ration control card. It is used to stem black marketing. If a person doesn't have a RCC, chances of getting into the PX/ Commissary are slim.

Have you thought about working on-base?
There are two places that are always hiring; The Dragon Hill Lodge and Youth Services.
The problem is that a person must not have 12 consecutive months with permanent residence status (yes, E2 is considered permanent residence status for employment purposes onbase).
But if you are ambitious enough and have enough money socked away, you can try working at AAFES New Car Sales, it is 100% commission but at least you get an A-3 visa and a ration control card to use the PX/Commissary. And after 12 months with them, you are free to seek further employment elsewhere with your A-3 visa status

Oh, I forgot to mention...You can also work to get a basepass by volunteering with the USO. And after you get it, you can go to the mini-marts on base, some of them are so small that they don't ask for a ration control card because they need the business.

Why would you want a "legal yet unconventional" way to get on a base?

If it's legal, it's not unconventional.

Purchasing privileges? You need Military ID and SOFA card that they punch holes in to track your rations of alcohol and electronic goods.

If you're asking a military service person or a civilian employee to purchase things for you, it is NOT legal. The service person can be brought up on charges, and the civilian employee either fired or have privileges revoked.

Hm? Volunteering at the USO sounds interesting. Where can I sign up and/or find more info.

Thanks for you replies

Actually now they just enter the serial number on the ration control card at the register. Everytime a person makes a purchase, the info is sent to a central database at AAFES and if there is any irregularities in the amount of stuff someone pruchases, they contact CID and start an investigation.

Instead of asking someone to get stuff for you on-base, start looking for work there.

Contact the YongSan operator at 02-793-1110 and ask for the number to the Camp Kim USO in Namyoung-Dong or just stop by the USO, any American citizen can use it, no restriction apply.

If you get escorted onto base or if you have a basepass, you are able to eat at Taco Bell.

But if you have a basepass, you can also see a movie free at the movie theater Wink

When I return to Korea, I'll be returning as a reservist. So although I will be a teacher "in the economy", I still get full base priviledges because I will serve there once a month.

Really? What's the reason for that? And is that at any time or just your current status?

I just hung out in front of the gate for about 10 minutes, and asked a sympathetic looking GI if he could sign me in. I gave him 20,000 for his trouble. And I had that Taco Bell you mention. Not bad for fast food.

I have an expired military dependant id. I've gotten into the px and commissary here in Ft. Hood, TX before they started requiring special car tags to get on post. It seems to be easy if you give a gi a list of things you'd like and pay them afterwards.

I have some army friends here in the states and they said they have a lot of friends stationed in Korea who maybe can help me with buying beef. I've also been thinking how I'd like to go onto the post near Itaewon. I came to visit for 3 months during 96,and it was so crazy.

While riding in a bus past Itaewon, I had flashback memories of living in military housing in there when I was about 7. I wonder how much of it still looks the same.

Is the px and commissary similiar to the ones on Ft. Hood? Like px has no tax, but commissary does, and px requires to see your military id while checking out but commissary doesn't. At least when I went last time, they just checked your id at the front at the commissary, but not when checking out surprisingly. I never go to either one of them here, because walmart is almost always cheaper.
