She leaves me alone totally most of the time. And if she asks me into her office it's either to just shoot the breeze or consult me on a new textbook she's looking at aquiring. I'm gonna be allow to design and run my own course next Feb, English through film. Viva la public university. |

I gave my boss a 10 for the following reasons:
1. I rarely saw him while I was teaching
2. He took me out for dinner regularly
3. He spontaneously (I was walking home from work) invited me to his home for dinner (it wasn't a big show, he was just being friendly)
4. He offered to pay to have my golf clubs sent to Korea when I told him that I didn't bring them
5. I'm pretty sure he asked me EVERY DAY for a year if I needed or wanted anything and promptly delivered what I asked for (not much really- all was well; another feather in his cap)
6. I was paid in full and on time every month- never late
7. This is a doozy- I broke my contract by leaving one month early and he still paid me my bonus and airfare...
The funny thing is my co-workers bitched about him a lot... I just didn't get it.
I could list a few things about him that weren't the most admirable qualities, but the positives far outweighed the negatives... |

8.
Good:
1. Paid on time, never a problem
2. never had any problems with me
3. friendly
4. teaches as much, if not more, than me
5. The one time i was sick, he sent me home right when he saw me.
Bad:
1. cheap. My apartment is rather umm bare.
2. knows lots of english, but slow when it comes to understanding and talking. You have to speak slowly and/or repeat a couple times before it sinks in |

My (ex) boss gets a 5. Middle of the bell curve.
He paid on time, and more or less in full, which is a big deal. My appartment was also pretty nice. But that still doesn't save him from being (to use mr beckersons term) an assclown. He was useless when anything needed to be done, he lied a lot, he was autocratic but indecisive, and he couldn't manage to save his life.
It was the best of times ... |

About an average of 6 so far.
That's not bad.
Certainly higher than I was expecting.
Interestingly enough though 6 is the one poll option that no one has voted for at this point. |

Any boss that can't speak English, never says anything about my teaching good or bad, takes me out to dinner once a month, and pays me on time is A-OK in my book. I was a little disappointed he didn't supply my dishes and silverware though, what gives? |

man..i gave her/him a nine (a much reviled mom and pop op...AND a chain...ouch...strikes...2)
ups:
-shows me a lot of respect
-if something is needed (in school) we get it within the week (not, like chalk, or books.... more printers, laminators etc...)
- our house (shared with a roomate and my fiance) is HUGE. Biggest waygook house i've been in. Don't know the pyong but it's a "good size" and i'm happy.
-NEVER had a problem with pay. Advances (in pinches) are not questioned
-trusts me
-thinks i'm a good teacher (am i a chump? It's important to be [since it'll be my career]).
-really good pay for a 2nd year dude
-have a 3yearly pissup and pigout with the staff....tres groovy!
- 2nd contract and everything went WONDERfully the first time.
drops
-no health care (although we have one of those "arrangements" that i've been worried about)...if push came to shove it would be the push you out and pay your bills kinda thing
-don't speak enough korean
-our head teacher, though kind as the best of them, is a bit lazy and there is no sort of "list of expectations" for people of titles or ranks. bit of a hassle.
-rarely see them
- the typical korean "management" scheme in effect.
- the other korean teachers so often talk about our classes, and we hear our names but they don't include us (probably happens with every school)
I would give my school a "come here...it's groovy, despite shared accs." in a HEART beat. Even though it's new |
