Hello everyone I need a bit of advice quickly.
My contract is finished May 31st so I was planning on flying out on June 1st.
However I just noticed that my E2 visa expires on May 29th (3 day overstay) and My Arc card on May 31st (1 day overstay).
Do I get a grace period? Are they gonna fine me when I try to leave?
Do I extend my E2 visa? OR do I extend my ARC card? Or do I extend both?
Where do I go to get these extensions if I need them?
How much does it cost?

This has been asked and answered an infinite number of times, but I guess it can be answered one more time!
If you take your ticket to immi showing a departure within 30 days of the expiry of your ARC, they will extend your stay until the date on your ticket no charge.
The expiry date of your VISA is completely irrelevant to when you leave. Only when you want to enter.

Thanks for your reply.
Variations of this have been answered from what I read but not specifically this problem. (I did do a search and read the stickies and couldn't find a definitive answer to this.)
So from your advice, I wont worry about the E2 visa and go get an extension on my ARC card.
Where I live they have a separate local office where I got my ARC card extended from the previous year (Anyang) and immigration office (Suwon). So I would not go to the immigration office to extend my ARC card but to the local one (I think heh).
Well I guess I will see what happens... |

If you go in with a plane ticket to show your departure, it costs nothing. However, then technically you are not legally supposed to work. If you are required to work on the 30th and 31st, LEGALLY you should get an extension of your contract. This will require an ammendment to your contract and some paper work from your school. If this is the route you choose, I would have them extend your contract until the 1st of June, when your flight leaves. This will cost 10,000 won, but your school should cover it, as they need you to work legally.
I had a teacher go the route with the plane ticket extension, and immigration showed up at our school during the allotted time, so there was a little bit of a concern. |

| That's interesting my situation is similar to this. My contract expires on the 14th (my visa on the 11th of this month), but my school has asked me to stay until the end of the month as they have not found a new teacher yet. Is it possible to overstay by 17/18 days, or is there a time restriction? I dont want to get in deep shite for helping them out. Thanks |

You have 2 choices. You MUST:
1) LEAVE Korea by midnight on the last day indicated on your ARC
OR
2) Get an extension from the local immigration office BEFORE the expiry of your current ARC.
If you do NOT do one of the above you WILL be fined for your overstay (and departure delayed until the fine is paid)
AND
you will have a black mark placed in your immigration file that may have consequences if you decide to stay in/return to Korea. |

Cheers. I'm sure the school will ammend the contract and go to immigration etc I was just worried if they would grant an extention by as much as 3 weeks. Thanks for your help. |

My understanding from what I have read is that the fine is 100,000 per day. Since my wife is here with me that would mean 2k for me. Also, I hope to get a contract teaching for SMOE next year after I come back from a lengthy summer vacation so I dont want any problems with immigration.
Good news for me though! My school has decided to let me have the 31st off and said I can go since it would be so much simpler to do it that way than give me a half day or so to go down and try to get the extensions. Saves me a bit of a headache...I'm so happy now.
So if I leave on the 31st my understanding is that I don't need to do anything...I hope.   |

It hasn't been that much for at least 3 years. When I was fined in 2005, they charged me a flat 100,000 for the first MONTH of overstay (I overstayed for 2 weeks through no fault of my own). It is AFTER the first 30 days of overstay that the fines increase exponentially. Of course, as I said, this was in 2005. Things may have changed yet again in that time. |

A simple extension for a few days is free.
Take your passport, ARC and departing ticket from Korea.
They will extend you until the date indicated on the ticket.
You cannot get a further extension after that. You must leave the country. |

Normally I would almost always agree with what Tom says, he is pretty accurate, however, I think this last post might be slightly misleading. And I don't wish to stub any toes here. Tom is correct if you are extending for travel purposes, but Sheba inquired based on work purposes.
If you are extending at the same school, or staying within the public school system, you DO NOT need to leave the country. If you are signing on for another year, all you need to bring is an ammendment to your contract, and paper work from the school. They should supply you with their business registration info, and perhaps another piece of paper. An extension of your contract will cost 30,000 won.
If you want to extend your stay in Korea for non-work related reasons, you can bring your plane ticket to immigration, and they will simply write the new date on the back of your card. Be sure not to work under these circumstances. |
