What artists/songs do you like? I've been listening to Michael Buble who is pretty good. Diana Krall kind of bores me a bit.
Anyone know of a good rendition of "fly me to the moon"?

I downloaded a funny ska band called Skanatra who do an amusing version of Fly Me to the Moon.
Best version of that song I've heard is Frank Sinatra at the Sands with Count Basie backing him up. I have it on CD somewhere. |

Diana Krall's last three albums have been disappointing to me. I'll be very hesitant about buying her next one.
Of recent stuff I recommend (off the top of my head, other than classic re-releases):
Wynton Marsalis' From The Plantation To The Penitentiary, on Blue Note
John Legend's Once Again, on Sony

Danny Aiello sings it like no other in the Richard Dreyfus and Holly Hunter flick Once Around (1991). |

Kurt Elling from Chicago is my favorite contemporary vocalist. Watching him at the Green Mill in Chicago is worth the journey from the South Side. |

If we're name-dropping, these boys are my favourite thing in the world.
For a more modern name, I listen to a lot of Jane Bunnett. |

I have a very narrow love for Jazz. Only John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders. And only in the 60's. Jazz turned into mush in the 70's.
Fly me to the moon? Go to a Korean Jazz bar and you can usually hear 'Fry me to the moon'. |

Pharaoh did a lot of good work in the 70's. A couple of the Alice Coltrane discs really allow him to fly free in that modal groove. |

Sonny Rollins -- nobody else even comes close. Just saw him live. One of the best experiences ever.

Since the great pianist/composer Andrew Hill recently passed away, I've been revisiting a lot of his music. Remarkably, he continued to be relevant and innovative until the end.
Right now I'm thoroughly enjoying the angular structures and inspired Eric Dolphy solos on Point of Departure. |
