|
|
FYI- I know that this is the norm for EPIK, public school teachers, etc...but I just heard that police down here in Daegu are now asking hogwans to submit the passports of their foreign teachers, so they can do criminal record checks.
I'll try to find out more on Monday if this is to be a permanent thing or just another crackdown phase. But apparently, they're asking for passports from both new E2 applicants as well as current teachers.
Any other regions hearing this buzz? |

Nope. Maybe they should do criminal background checks of owners and directors, too. |

and again, how are they doing this? is immigration funding the 24.95-50.00$ cost to do a personnal backgroung check? Or are they going through the FBI , altough I cannot see the FBI or any other state or federal agency giving out private information to a foreign government?
I think, and please correct me if I am wrong, that this another attempt at the good old rumor mill going overboard. I just cannot see anyone in this country having the capability to read, let alone run, a personnal background check from an English speaking country. Again, I could be wrong but I just cannot believe that any police station would do this for any foreign power. It is too invasive, especially without the consent of the individual.
I for one will never let my passport out of my sight, except to immigration. Giving your passport to anyone, even a foreign police force is opening yourself to all kinds of trouble. Unless it becomes a government law they can pry my passport from my cold dead hands. |

Does anyone know how to get a copy of your criminal record for sure? I tried to get a copy of my husband's from the USA in September. We had him fingerprinted, bought a USD money order, sent it all to the States with forms filled out to the T. Still have not received it 8mths later. |

A more cynical man would remark that perhaps if it was something you worried about, um, maybe you should have tried to get it BEFORE getting married ...
Hey, just kidding around ... come on, put down that rock. It was a joke! |

Bossman: I need your passport.
Noob: Why?
Bossman: It is a new police policy.
Noob: How come I've never heard of this before?
Bossman: Police just told me about it.
Noob: How long will you hold it for?
Bossman: You can trust me.
Noob: How long will you hold on to my f**** passport for?
Bossman: I will only hold it for a couple of days.
Noob: (4 days later) Can I have it back please?
Bossman: Oh, I will give it to you after work.
Noob: (After work) Can you give me my passport back please?
Bossman: It's at my house.

OP- If you do find out it's true, then tell them you'll do a background check for yourself. |

I just found out that this only applies to new E2 applicants and the policy was actually implemented back in Feb. I'm assuming its just a Daegu thing or a poorly done national thing. |

The RCMP takes 150 business days to process a criminal record check for a Canadian citizen. On top of that, I think it is very very difficult for a 3rd party to obtain the records check. All it would achieve is the crippling of the hogwon industry and the eventual end of the crack down.
That probably means that the records check is only in country, which is beyond silly, considering Korea's judicial philosophy and the mobility of foreign teachers. |
