Lately I've been feeling the majority, if not all of the foreigners I will meet and be friends with in Korea, are just sort of partial friends and that I will not stay friends with them when I leave Korea. Don't you find that so many people you are just friends with here just because they happen to speak english and you probably wouldn't be friends with them back home>?
Sure I've met some super interesting people here with great stories, but probably none of them I'll be life long friends with. There are some crazy ffing people for sure. ... Maybe i'm just really missing my friends back home and having some real fun.... |

that's because most people come here with a VERY SPECIFIC agenda..
some are here to find a korean wife, others are here to make as much money as they can for a year or two, and still others are here to bang as many korean girls/guys as possible...
some are here for 2 or more of the above and other are here for other reasons..
with these specific goals, people are unwilling to form deep meaningful friendships that will take away/hinder them from reach their goals.. |

Agreed. I really don't know if I'm going to have meaningful friendships with many of the people I've met here. I can imagine myself keeping up with email contact with a few of my Korean friends, but that's about it.
And dcjames, my agenda isn't any of the above. My agenda in Korea is as follows: "Uhhhhhhhhhh....." |

When I came here 5 years ago I made a rule: no friends I wouldn't be friends with back home.
It's served me well. |

At the end of the day we make friends for a reason. This person and that person offer something to stimulate you. Maybe it is just a drinking buddy? Maybe he is just a great story teller? The main reason you have the "true friends" in life is because you can trust them with anything and they also provide support and you would also take a bullet for each other. There is not many people I would take a bullet for that I have met in korea that is for sure. Unless you really want to meet that person that you met in Korea again your paths will cross.
I also believe friends are about personal growth together. If you have a friend that is a dope smoking stupid mo fo then you know he is not really going to help you in your future, unless you want a job in the underworld dealing in drugs.

Korea is no different to me than any other place in this respect. I have friends here that I will keep in touch with my whole life.
On the other hand, I have a lot of friends here who are nice people, but with whom I'm probably just friends because we're in the same situation, and when we leave we'll probably lose touch.
Same as anywhere else. |

I think that one difference than back home is the part about being in the same situation. The people you meet here, will probably not be in your same situation 5 years from now. Back home it is possible for someone to live in the same place for 10- 20 years and continue to have something in common for years. It is like my parents and my neighbors back home. They have both lived in the same house for close to 30 years. They have both raised kids and will probably die in the county in which they were born. Thus they continue to have things in common and will continue to be friends. |

I still like telling Koreans that I had absolutely no reason for coming to Korea. |

| As a newbie one has little choice. What I like about being here a while is that I can pick and choose my friends, be they foreigners or Korean. Not surprisingly, my list of favourite foreign friends is mostly composed of people who've been here a while. That even includes foreigners I've met more recently. |
