So I guess every DVD player in Korea is region 3, which makes sense, but I know that you can get a region free player in the states. I don't know if it's illegal to sell them over here or what the deal is, but I brought a bunch of movies with me and am tired of watching them on my laptop (I tried hooking it up to my tv, but aparently that is beyond my technical knowhow. Or maybe it has something to do with my video card, regardless, it doesn't work.) Can you get a RFree player here or can you get someone to convert a R3 player to play R1 dvd?

If you google the name and model number of your DVD player with "region free hack" you will probably find a code that you can use to change your dvd player's region. You will find most DVD players can be cracked in this way.

What about for those of us who don't live in Seoul? I'm in Busan, and the cheapest I've found is about 135,000 won at Homeplus. I've looked everywhere - Himart doesn't even sell dvd players. And why is it that I can only buy crappy Samsung and LG brands? Rolling Eyes

I bought an Oppo DVD player at Tesco Homeplus, in Hwamyeong Dong, Busan for 100,000 won. More than happy with it. Region free.

Can't help. It's hard to scour Busan for electronic stuff because I live in Seoul.

to play from a laptop

look at the tv port on your laptop it will be either a s-vid (4 (normally) small holes with one oblong hole all inside a circle) or an RCA (a hole that has yellow plastic around it) sorry if my descriptions of the ports are bad.

see if the tv has the same port on the back

get the cable and plug in to tv.

if different you need an adaptor cable (can't think of the correct name)

to get the cable take the laptop to a computer shop and (if your korean is as bad as mine) point at your the tv port and say tv

if you can not find the tv port skip everything till last step.

Sometimes it does take abit of playing around but 80,000 for a dvd player or a max of 5,000 for a cable. if you would like further (i.e. better) help pm me I should be able to talk you through it.

it is easier than it sounds

If you already have a DVD player, don't buy anything just because it's region free!

I bought 2 region 1 DVD players and one region 3 over the years and set them all to region free without paying anything to anyone. Just like rokgryphon said, Google a little and you should be able to do it for free. If you can't, PM me and I'll see if I can help.

I bought one in Yongsan 2 years ago for 140,000 (I think). It is a Lotte and it is like my baby, I love it. I plays every file I have burned from my computer whether on DVD or CD, except those stupid .mov files, but it does play Mp4. You just have to change the region when watching different movies and the menus are in about 20 languages. It really is an amazing player and I have never had a problem with it.
