I got some funky Japanese postcards in Tokyu Hands whilst in Tokyo. I'd like to find a similar sort of thing to send back to people from Korea - not the typical 80s cityscape you seem to get in all the tourist shops here, but something more quirky, perhaps Konglish, and fun.

Any ideas where to look? Do you lot send back postcards whilst over here teaching, or do you think the fact you're over here for a year+ makes letters more appropriate?

I send postcards from here on occasion....

I have found some interesting ones at various bookstores...

A word of advice, don't write too much on it, otherwise you will boggle the minds of postal staff...where to put the stamp?!?? Rolling Eyes

No question, hands down, the coolest postcards I've seen are in Seoul, in Insadong, at a little store called "Good Job!" They sell cute, creepy and kitchy postcards which may or may not have actually been designed in the early 70s, but they sure look that way.

Insadong is at Jongno-3 on the subway map (a short walk from the subway exit), and the shop I'm talking about is part of a really innovative little mall, which is built like a ramp, ascending around a rectangle, up to around three storeys. I wish I could give you better instructions, but good luck and happy hunting.

Oh, I am glad someone else has found that store too! Yes, brilliantly retro-kitsch stuff going on there.
To be more concise, the store Kermo is talking about is in the recently-opened SSAMZIE-GIL area about halfway up the street. The shop is on ground level and is very cool.
Bought a postcard that says "Wonderful Korea" with a photo of a smiling Korean housewife knitting in her armchair, with her young son standing to the side pointing a [toy] machine gun right at her. Excellent!

Meant to say earlier - I found that shop (and that postcard!) - fantastic. Nothing suitable for my Granny sadly, but still picked up postcards to send to friends Smile

Thanks for the tip!

When I lived in Russia, I used to cut out the front of small packaged boxes and use them as postcards - it makes for something refreshing for the people at home to see...I recently made one out of an instant ̿ box to send off...

Unlike London, New York, Vancouver and most other big cities, there are no postcards in Seoul of the sights, Admiral Li, the 63 Building, the DMZ, castles, towers, the river through Seoul downtown etc. In Vancouver you trip over stores selling postcards, in Seoul, you find these crappy arty cards in bookstores, none which say, "Hi friend from Ontario, I'm in Korea right now. That's a Korean object."

This omission is a weird aspect of life in Seoul.

Someone tell me I'm wrong and tell me where there are touristy postcards of Korea to mail home.

Sorry Tommy, those are artistic cards, they are not cards of South Korea. Where are the postcards of the DMZ for eg?

Yes, I'm interested in Benbby's question as well. Can anyone tell us a shop where real Seoul/Korea postcards are sold? With pictures of Chunggyecheon, Namsan, Namdaemun, the nightlife, or anything else even remotely Korean? Please, anything other than those tacky superhero postcards from that Insadong shop.
