I am interested in setting up a tutoring business next year and would be interested to see how people have done this in their home or rented officetel. I would like to know about all aspects including legality, amount of money needed for startup, marketing, etc. If anyone has any personal experience could you please pm me, or feel free to post on this thread. Thank you

Assuming you are all legal
Firstly, why bother renting space for a classroom? It is a business expense that you do not need.
If you invite students into your home, make sure you have an efficient way of getting them out after the time is up, you don't want them to linger. That's why it is better to go to their place, sure you have travel time and expense, but you can factor that into your price.
Word of mouth is the best advertising, do you have any students now who will spread the word for you?

I've only read about some people renting out space, so I'm not set on doing that at all. Being that I live in a one room officetel now, I know I would need a bigger place, hopefully with at least 2 rooms. The idea was for me to teach a small group of students for one hour and have my wife teach another group for one hour. After the hour was up the groups would switch.

I really don't want to have to commute all over the place, which is why I prefer to have the students come to me.

I don't have any students right now because this is something that I am looking into possibly starting next year. I'm trying to research as much as I can to see if this is even plausible

Are you E2 / E7 or F2 / F4? What is your wife's status (citizen or resident visa)?

As of now I'm on an E2. The reason that I'm researching is because I'm not sure if I will leave next year, or stay another 2 years. If I stay for 2, then we will probably marry in Korea rather than in the states (my gf is Korean). I have no interest in setting up this tutoring thing unless I get married here and can get the appropriate visa (F2 or F4)

I'm just trying to weigh all my options and hopefully make a wise decision.
