|
|
Hello,
I will arrive in Seoul the 1st of Aug and I need a job while Im there. Im swedish and back home in Sweden I work as a teacher in high school (I graduated 3 years ago, after 4,5 years at University) I have spent two years teaching in the Swedish system and one year in an International school teaching Science in English - so I'm not an english teacher altough I teach in english. I wonder if it is possible for me to get a working visa in Korea to teach english while im there. Is it a good idea to take a toefl test, will that help me to get a job?

You could work illegally on a tourist visa, but I wouldn't recommend it. |

You probably could if you were a certified to be a teacher in Korea. |

So you must be a native English speaker to get an E-7 for a content area teaching position at a foreign/international school? |

You cannot legally teach in Korea. Of course, you can illegaly do so, but I wouldn't encourage that. If caught, you can get deported but many people do it, and since you are Swedish and probably white, you could get away with it. I met a French girl who was teaching kindergarten. Obviously, she wasn't doing it legally. I suppose if you majored in English in England then you could maybe teach in Korea. However, if you were teaching in Taiwan, it is technically, illegal, but the Taiwanese don't really crackdown on this very much. Hell, you can see Italians teaching English Taiwan. People do sometimes get deported in Korea. But many of us have seen illegal teachers and I've worked with someone before who was a university student from the U.S. and studying in Korea and teaching. |

Go to Korean Teacher's College and pass the certification exams. |

I'm not absolutely but some countries are authorized a working holiday visa. This allows you to work for 3 months at a time, but not more than that consecutively. Also, if you come on a student visa there are provisions for teaching a certain amount of hours per week. You would need to check in to that for yourself. Whatever you do be careful, immigration is quick to slap you with a fine. Just use the regs to your benefit. |

But you still have to be eligible for a visa to do that kind of work...and the OP wouldn't be. |

For most hagwon, public school and uni jobs out here, you may be hard pressed to find teaching work as most places will only hire foreigners from the English-speaking Anglosphere. However, I did have a German friend who was a chemistry teacher at an international school here in Seoul. If you have a truly certified to teach at an international school and if there is indeed a need, you just may be in luck.
I would advise to google key words: international school korea and see what every respective school is specifically looking for on their websites. Don't get discouraged. Keep your head up. Good luck! |
