|
|
I am teaching a one-on-one class to a middle school girl who goes to an international school, so her spoken English is pretty good and she has very good reading comprehension skills. However, her grammar is not so hot. Right now I'm teaching her the JungChul Zenith GRE Reading and Essay Writing books, but I need a grammar only text book to supplement my lesson plans. I don't like the JungChul grammar book, and most of it is in Korean which makes it really difficult to teach.
She really is a clever girl, and learns quickly, so I want a book that isn't completely boring and doesn't insult her intelligence.
Any suggestions? |

I am fond of the More Grammar Practice (Thompson/Heinle) and Grammar in Context series (Heinle/Heinle). Grammar Lab (Oxford, I think) is great, as well.
If I were you, I'd run down to Kim and Johnson's at Gangnam station and sift through their robust collection of teaching materials. |

I use the following book, which is very user friendly.
A-Z of English Grammar by Geoffrey Leech
I also seen this in a large bookshop in Seoul (next to a subway station! somewhere).
The following were additional recommendations on my TEFL course;
Grammar Books:
"English Grammar in Use" (with answers) by Raymond Murphy. (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced versions)
"Practical English Usage" by Michael Swan
"Discover English" by Bolitho & Tomlinson
"The Good Grammar Book" (with answers) by Michael Swan & Catherine Walter
"How English Works: A Grammar Practice Book" (with answers) Michael Swan & Catherine Walter
"Practical English Grammar" by A.J. Thomson and A.V. Martinet
Methodology Books:
"How to Teach English" by Jeremy Harmer
"The Resourceful English Teacher" by Chandler/Stone
"Teach Yourself: Teaching English" by David Riddell
"Teaching Tenses " by Rosemary Aitken
Another useful resource is www.edufind.com/english/grammar/ and the Google Search Engine can provide answers to specific EFL queries.
I hope you find something useful

| Azar's books are good for one-to-ones. They also have workbooks, which make for good homework. |
