|
|
I'm going to be teaching 8 of my middle school students a play over the next couple of months. However, I am at a loss. I'm not familiar with many plays. Their English levels are quite low, but I found that with the right motivation, this is not much of a deterrent for them. I was wondering if anybody knows of any plays and/or websites that might be helpful in my conquest of creating the first Korean Denzel Washington.
Thanks!~ |

Hey there - I teach the drama class at my school and we're doing Summer Nights from the musical Grease. It's a lot of fun to teach and would be perfect for eight students if they don't mind doing a bit of singing. Here are the lyrics and parts if you want them:
(I started out doing it as a listening excercise).
Summer Nights: from the movie Grease
Summer loving had me a blast
Summer loving ______________ so fast
Met a girl __________ for me
Met a boy cute as can ____
Summer days drifting ___________
Oh, those summer nights
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
(Tell me more, tell me ___________)
(Did you get very ________?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Like does he have a ______?)
She swam by me, she got a cramp
He ran by me, got my suit __________
Saved her life, she ___________ drowned
He showed off splashing around
Summer _________, something's begun
But, uh oh, those summer ____________
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Was it __________ at first sight?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Did she put up a ___________?)
Took her bowling in the _____________
We went strolling; ____________ lemonade
We made out ___________ the dock
We stayed out till ________ o'clock
Summer fling don't mean a __________
But, us oh, those summer nights
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(But you __________ gotta brag)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
('Cause he sounds ________ a drag)
He got friendly holding my __________
Well, she got friendly down in the __________
He was sweet, just turned ______
Well, she was good, you know what I mean
Summer heat, _______ and _______ meet
But, uh oh, those summer nights
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(How much ___________ did he spend?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
('Cause she get me a ___________?)
It turned colder, that's ____________ it ends
So I told her we'd still be ____________
Then we made our true love ______
Wonder what she's ___________ now
Summer ____________ ripped at the seams
But, oh, those summer _____________
(Tell me more, tell me more)

| I would love to do things like that but I can't see where the students will get the time to do it. |

Talk about doing a drama CA (club activity) class, or see if your school has any blocks set aside for extra classes. |

Yu_Bum_Suk,
Great idea. I think that would really be a lot of fun. I live/teach in a very country side of Korea, and our school is really small. Singing on top of acting might prove to be a little difficult for my students, but I'm curious as to how open they might be to it. Naturally, I want to make sure that whatever I chose to have them do will be something they would enjoy doing since we will be working on it for a while.
Many thanks for the idea, if you have any others please let me know! |

I think it's oxford books has a great ESL resource section where you can find plays for some of it's classic fairy stories.
I will have a dig around and see. |

You really only need two students who can sing to make it work. The others can speak their lines if necessary. |

I think we're going to do a skit on the social pressures young teenagers experience from their peers, teachers and parents.
I was thinking, "Daddy is a prostitute because you don't study enough." |

Thanks for the heads up on this. I have just registered with them and am beginning to see the benefits behind doing so. This will be a big help even beyond the play.

Sorry they don't work
You need to sign up for the OUP website
It's something like
www.oup.com/elt
Teachers Club on the left hand side. |

How receptive were your students towards doing this type of skit? Did they seem genuinely interested? |

Oh, and another thing...
I was just curious if you created the layout for the Grease play, or if you found it somewhere online?
Once the kids perform the play, how will you have the music play without lyrics, and what happens if a student forgets his/her line even for a couple seconds? Would you stop the music or just have them continue?
I would really like to consider doing this as well, but being this is my first time to teach something like this, I am a bit uncertain about some of the details of execution. |

Try reader's theater. There are a few easy skits here on this site that the students can perform:
www.aaronshep.com/rt/RTE.html
Profile ddeubel on this site and his webpage has a few skits as well. |
