I'd be more annoyed that instead of telling you your gum chewing bothered him, he went to your boss. What a snitch! I guess he feels you are a little kid and your mommy needs to be notified to pull you into line. |
I was thinking the exact same thing. What a big baby! If he had a problem with your chewing gum, he should have had the balls to mention it to you.
I don't chew gum while teaching, but unless a student is chomping away I don't make a big deal of it if they do (unless it's a school rule, of course). |

I definitely wasn't chomping away, smacking, blowing bubbles or whatever. I just had gum in my mouth. As far as someone saying would a teacher chew gum or a prof in North America.
Yes, it happens all the time. The students are not supposed to, but the profs and teachers aren't the students. I chewed gum when I was a public school teacher to freshen my breath. I only did it once in a while, but my neighbour chewed gum quite often.
I can't remember if my professors did, but it is possible that it happened. No idea. If he had a problem, I suppose he could have just told me or something, but I understand he doesn't want to be embarassed, but he shouldn't have said "I am rude". I am not rude. I just didn't know about this cultural thing. I talked to one of my friends in the army who once visted Korea and they were briefed on such cultural things, so he wasn't surprised. I would have preferred he just told me. I can respect that he doesn't want me doing that, but not going about it the way he did. I would have for example said "I like so and so teacher, he does a good job, but today he was chewing gum, and I didn't like that". That seems fairer to me. That's being civil about things, I think.
I wouldn't care if any of my adult students were chewing gum. They are adults. We are adults. |

I won't speak with someone chewing gum unless I can't avoid it. |

I sometimes chew gum (subtly) when I'm teaching to keep my breath fresh. This is especially important in a close-quarters conversation class. |

Man talk about rude, haha just kidding. But really, that is wrong. Be professional man. No matter how unprofessional or uncoothed anyone else is there should always be a standard of conduct for teachers. We are the ones passing on knowledge to the future leaders of the world. Whether you are teaching the queen of England or a kindergartener with an attitude you should always be professional and set an example as a teacher. |

Point well taken, but I think it is a cultural issue as well, because North American culture is more laid back. A friend from Russia told me some have a similar attitude regarding gum that many in America and Canada don't. Like the poster said above you I chew gum to freshen my breath, but I'll just make sure I spit it out before I have a student, so I won't offend anyone.
I have a feeling the majority of my students, to give them credit, wouldn't have been pissy about such a thing. It's a personality thing. But the fellow is paying for the lesson and whatever he wants, he gets. I just think the way it was handled was kind of a little overkill. That's all. I can understand someone maybe not liking their teacher to have gum in his or her mouth. I assure you, though, I am not a rude person. I do recall when I taught in a public school seeing colleagues chewing gum. The kids weren't supposed to, because some would probably put gum under their chairs or something. However, as one poster said this should be on my time in this case. I can't disagree with that. |
