Cloned Dogs to Marry This Year
Quote: |
The world's first cloned dog, a male named Snuppy, will be mated later this year to the worlds second canine clone, a female dubbed Bona.
Prof. Kim Min-kyu at Seoul National University, who played key roles in creating both dogs, unveiled the plan in an interview with The Korea Times on the occasion of Snuppy's second birthday that takes place tomorrow.
``Snuppy has shot up to be an adult dog. It can now give birth to its offspring and we are waiting for Bona to grow up,'' Kim said.
``We think Bona will be ready late this year. Then we plan to mate the two clones _ both Afghan Hounds _ in November or December,'' Kim said.
The ``marriage is not entirely for the happiness of the two-year-old Snuppy and Bona, born on June 18 last year. Rather, it is for the data the two will provide scientists on cloned animals.
``Snuppy and Bona are very healthy at the moment and we are carrying out various tests with the clones,'' Kim said.
``To learn about their reproductive capacity, producing babies between them would be the best way,'' he said.
Snuppy has suffered ups and downs over the past two years due to Korea's disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk, the former boss of Prof. Kim and his associates.
The cloned dog became a national celebrity in Aug. 2005 when the male Afghan Hound was first unveiled but its authenticity came under suspicion after Hwang was found to have manipulated data to fraudulently claim other biological breakthroughs.
Some have insisted that Snuppy is also a fake, but intensive tests by local and overseas experts have proven its veracity. In light of all the controversy surrounding the authenticity of the teams research, the miracle dog, Snuppy, has almost been forgotten.
Not bothering with the disputes or lack of attention, Snuppy has been living a very active, healthy life unlike other cloned mammals that are typically feeble with many dying in their early days.
Kim is thankful that Snuppy, who stands at about 80 centimeters and weighs 29 kilograms, has grown up so well.
``Snuppy eats well and sleeps sound. He really enjoys playing with people or taking a walk inside Seoul National University,'' Kim said.
``We are to have a small party on April 24 to celebrate his second birthday, maybe his final birthday party as a bachelor,'' he beamed.
Still, no other research group other than the Seoul National University team has succeeded in replicating a dog even two years after the birth of Snuppy.
In this sense, Snuppy and Bona are one of a kind as their offspring will be too.

So far, most cloned animals have not been very healthy, with shorter lifespans. So, I wouldn't be too hopeful for the offspring of two clones. But we'll see. |

I had a student named Bona; I always wondered where she got the name. |
