Another hasty generalization on my part surely, but Korean women seem to prefer men who exude a "gentle" quality. Your friend might be as gentle as Paddington the Bear but his large size might scare women, thinking he's some hormone filled roid rager. You know?

As well, don't discount your own actions. At home, you might have always been more timid but here you take more risks.

I'm not saying my "had success at home, have success here" is E=MC2. It's simply a good assumption to go on.

I don't know. The girls seem to pass judgement in an instant here, before we can even show any side of persona. I think it's my "hawkish" features, as I've been referred to back home. Big nose, narrow head. What do you think about a theory of Koreans liking the opposite of their own generally roundish facial features? Maybe. I'm not complaining too much though, for whatever reason I'm getting girls here, never did back home generally. Laughing

I don't think it's impossibly hard at all. If you are a decent person who's true to yourself, confident, reasonably well-adjusted and treat people with respect it seems to attract people towards you. I live in a medium-sized, regional city far from Seoul but I've still been able to find girls interested in me for genuine reasons, and not just to shag me (though, I wouldn't really mind that) or to leech English lessons off.

That said, it does seem that Korean girls are more attracted to the quieter, more shy types. I have a few friends who more outgoing and loud not have too much success, and I've had Korean girls say that they are not attracted to the more outgoing types.

If that's true it must be my BO keeping them away.

Another thought, based on a discussion with my GF. A Korean woman walking with a typically hunky Western guy is generally thought to be a ho bag, even by the other women. She's just in it for the high hard humpin'. A Korean woman with a more, ummm, intellectual, sensitive type (endo/ectomorphs/comic book collectors) might not engender such attitudes.

In a rather round about way, my GF explained this is what she likes about me. I'm not your typical hunky slab of American man meat, the kind of guy you know can just fork a woman in half... She says this, I remind you, expecting me to be complimented. Oish.

Gain: woman with no back fat. Loss: No talent for verbal ego boosting. Zero sum gain.

Backfat!!!!!! I hate that, EW !

Oh, and sometimes I fell like I'm already in Korea. Weird things keep happening....I was walking in flip flops the other night in my town to do laundry and I realized how in the streetlights, I had to be vey carefull not to let my pants legs or my flipflops (i hate flipflops) step into the spit puddles.....everywhere.......in a college town in NY where I live.....ironic, doncha think? Also, people were yelling and being obnoxios and harrassing and there was bumping into and pushing going on all over....

I noticed mcuh backfat, highlights and exposed beer bellies so I am quite sure it was American girls.

I'd like to know more about the ego propping thing. I have a couple of chinese lady friends I still email in taiwan. Bot married (one's husband cheats) both are unbelievably supportive to the "ego" of their man. It was quite impressive.....very positive, very strong and steady.....good women. I hear Japanese are the best at this and they freak out over wanting to serve their man....like with a tray I guess all the time???? Who knows. Supposedly they fall all over you. And do they still trail behind ya? SO, if Korean don't have backfat (or butts or busts) what is their tendancy to be emotionally generous? They sound mad crafty from this board so far....I'm getting parnoid...

Honestly, they don't make eye contact and pretend not to talk english BUT, I had one HOT ABC try to seduce me (too young), one ABC changed her mind after the 2nd date (too chunky anyway), one waitress 'offered' me her 2 daughters in a weird creepy awkward exit from a sshi place my friends took me to (too young), one chunky 18 yr old local girl brought beer and food and a friend to my hostel after I essentially said 2 words to them earlier in the day...like directions maybe...i forgot (too giggly), I had one superhot girl take me all over town to help me get a cellphone when I just asked her for an address and she freaked when I hugged her goodbye.....she had a boyfriend and felt "violated" it was later explained....like, that I "felt I could just hug her".......mostly they are really too shy to get someplace with....but as the afore mentioned examples show, it was hit or miss, all miss and mostly nothing. Sooner or later, I'd do OK. I do have the surfer AF look .....I got that going for me.

Forget about the country or the culture; you will never ever know a woman until you live with one over the long term...and I don't mean as roomies. Even then, you will quickly find that while there are similiarities, both within and across cultures, it is tough to compare in absolute terms. For the most part, the advice and conjecture on this thread should be taken with a grain of salt. Reminds me of the back of the bus advice on women we all got growing up.

Hahaha.. ok, actually it just sounds like dating at home... I dont wanna know for personal planning-reasons. Just curious..

Based on what you said, I'd say its better in Shanghai than Taiwan. Just FYI.

What's "ABC"?

I think if you learn to speak the language and culture you will understand that there is one constant. You can't understand. If you have companionship then be grateful. I have five sisters, They are crazy. I have had several girlfriends in the past, the important thing to remember is that women are as simple and complex as we men are. They want what they can't have and have what they don't want. They act culturally correct. Would you like to be the one shunned by your family and peers? It's not them it's the whole culture. proverbially speaking, "Runts die". It's blend or die here. accept it or go home. The only sound advice.
If you haven't found the right kind of girl then you have not been looking in the right kind of place.

Yeah Shanghi is magical for food, sex, and shopping. Its very cool I hear. Its so expensive though and the pollution and the craziness gets to you after a year or two......so I've heard consistently. Never been myself.

Definitely less sheepish yonder I'd recon. Taiwanese think they are cosmo, like Koreans do too I presume, but no they are so not. Taiwan really sucks, I just threw away the brand new unused 3 yr old Lonely Planet cause I didn't want the karma of even an ebayer paying me for this to then go there! Its that unrecommendable. Also, nothing they said was correct/worth reading. I won't even buy the Korean one now! ABC is American Born Chinese. She was 1/2 jew and 1/2 chinese 100% San Diego, just moved there like 3 months ago, MANE of CURLY (jew) hair down to her waist, 5ft9, 140ish B - C cups, she looked all chinese but you'd think she was wearing a huge wig. She was beautiful, beyond book smart, nice, and is actually the star of a show now on TV teaching english. Great girl. She looked 18 then as California girls tend to look. She was 15 ! I'm like....no, really...seriously you gotta wait in there while I change and shower. Sometimes, I hate being honorable. Today I had my LANDLORD who is insane, 73 and NYC italian call me up screaming for her day late rent (don't got) and within one hour of that I found myself handing back one EXTRA $100 bill to my 83 year old employer cause he didn't notice his mistake! OMG, Koreans are not gonna know what to do with somebody this honorable. I had a Taiwanese School Owner actually tell me that I "should not teach in Taiwan" since I expected the contracts, "to be honered and obey as they do in the America"! Jordan's English School people, stay away from them all. OK, gotta do laundry, procrastinating.....also gotta check the bank balance on the way to the laundrymat....procrastinating....None of this will be a problem in Korea though!! Yay! Yay I love Korea as MollyBloom says! Rolling Eyes
