Is there a difference between the meanings of but in these 2 sentences?? If so, what is the difference??
He is anything but a genius.
France has the highest rate in all of Europe but England. |

I would give them the same meaning "other than" which would give the first sentence a meaing that he is anything "other than" a genius. and the second France has the highest rate in all of Europe "other than" England.

Icicle - thanks for replying....
A man dropped by the school yesterday and wanted to see me, his english was pretty good and he just had a multi choice question he wanted my opinion on - so i gave it. I found out he is the parent of a student from one of my boss's other schools (which doesnt have a foreign teacher). Aparently his daughter answered this question the same as me, but the K teacher marked it wrong and the father had a mental about it because he agreed with the daughter and myself. I heard the K teacher got in a bit of trouble over it, and is defending herself saying I dont know the grammar or technicalities behind it. (Not her exact words by the way).
I didnt get in any trouble myself, but Im just wanting other opinions cos I started second guessing myself.

I think Icicle is correct on the first statement. Personally, the second sentence is badly worded; but, would make more sense by saying, "in all of Europe second to England. |

The first sentence is an insult. The second sentence was NOT written by a native speaker. |
