For the love of god, does everyone have to snack on disgusting crap in my immediate presence?

If it's the movie theater or the pc bang, you'll inevitably have to endure microwaved dried squid. Smells like cat food at the very best. The shite kind.

If it's a watering hole, inevitably somebody's got to order the 'stinkfish', which hopefully will be consumed with haste but often isn't. It's there to marinate in everybody's nostrils. I'd rather have more second-hand smoke, to be perfectly honest.

If it's your classroom, no matter how often and forcefully you drive the point home--even with the support of Korean counterparts--little Bum-suk is going to pound some octopus in your poorly-ventilated room as class commences (and play innocent).

If it's the bus, subway or sidewalk, you'll be treated to innumerable people of all ages, walks of life and gender picking their noses and often eating it. Yum! Hope it boosts your immune system.

No wonder nobody fancies a vacation here. The place reeks, it's gross and the stuff I mention is just the beginning... Embarassed

It's only better during the middle of July when you are in a crowded bus with poor air conditioning and a lot of weary and smelly middle-aged mountain climbers post-descent and on their way home pass that AND soju around the bus--a prize winning olfactory combination.

I don't eat squid/cuddlefish on the bus or take it around town with me, but I don't turn it down when it's around. Good eatin', man, pure and simple. It's like an ocean beef jerky. No, it's an ocean deer jerky.

Get over it...

So what, you don't like squid...I hate it too but if people want to eat it then I am not going to be silly about it.

Talk about an overgeneralization...

You missed the point. I detest the stench of squid. I rather enjoy eating it cooked properly.

I also detest violence, but if people desire to fight then I'm going to voice my disapproval. I'd liken microwaved squid in the movie theater to violence directed towards my gastrointestinal comfort. That's how bad it is. Call me crazy, but I'm sick of that shit (literally). Who needs to microwave something that's already dried, anyway?

I hate the shit, too. I never eat it, raw, cooked, processed and fried on an open burner. Hate it.
Cat food is exactly what it smells like.
But, hey, it's what helps make Korea unique.

Just like all the Americans who eat burritos and tacos and rave on about them. After I eat tacos it feels like the roof of my mouth has been scratched.
And then, all the Mexicans get crumbs stuck in their moustaches. But hey, it's what makes Mexico and southern states unique.

Don't get me started about Italians and their stupid bread and olives. And the Japs and their mishy mushy sushi ... Oh, those Brits with their fish 'un chups and revolting nougat ... yuck.

mid/late-90's the movie theaters, before every movie, showed their warnings on the screen:
* don't talk during the movie
* turn off your beeper
* don't throwyour trash on the floor
* DON'T EAT SQUID

I always laughed at that last one.

I hate the smell of coffee. People are so rude to drink it around me. Goodness forbid that they have a beverage they enjoy drinking because it's all about ME. I hate it and therefore it sucks and should be banned from any and all rooms that I enter.

Whenever I see people eat squid, I wonder........ why? What is actually enjoyable about that putrid smell and weird texture? I can't tell the difference between a stinky men's washroom and the smell of squid. How people enjoy something that smells like the worst piss in the worst urinal just doesn't make sense to me...

I have also gotten very sick from it.

Let this be the "I hate squid" thread! Yaaaay!

Not many Koreans consider cheese a great smell. If you don't like the squid smell, you probably should get out of Korea now. It's kind of one of those basic things to the culture.

There are things worthy of complaints:

Spitting: unsanitary, gets on your shoes

Pushing to get on a subway: Slows everyone down

Motorcycles on the sidewalk: Dangerous

It's culturally contingent. Lots of Asians say the same thing about the smell of cheese, especially the more pungent varieties.
