It wasn't intentional. But I found myself with a group of guys and they took me to my first juicy bar. Was interesting. I decided to see how far I could take it and not only would they 'deliver' me a man, but one of the girls was also eager to please....me.
So, there you have it.
I left alone, but the fact is, Korea is not the place I thought it was.

but it is also sad. I mean, for the girls and the guys. The guys I was with are young and not bad looking, but they seemed tired of chasing girls, spending a lot of money and yet still ending up home alone...thats sad.

But worse...one of the hookers took a liking to me and walked me to the door, gave me her cell phone number and said she'd like to 'see me'....in what way I'm not sure but she seemed really sad to see me go. The arjuma there was basically forcing her on guys and she seemed so helpless. What a fckd up situation.

I do have one question: for young, decent looking guys: is soliciting a turn-on/attraction or more....desperation????

I'm not judging. I mean, it's just 3am and I'm (almost) sober. Home alone with a cup of tea, reflecting on the night...

The plight of some of these young women is indeed sad and
can, and should, be avoided in a modern society.

However, what I really mean is, if that hooker calls you, then
PM me and we'll have a party! Yeah baby! If not then at
least send me some pics.

What kind of bar did you go to? One of those places on Hooker Hill?

I disagree. Morally I don't like prostitution and I wish there was a better way for these women to live, but it's been around forever and will continue. Because it will continue, it should be legal, regulated and prostitutes should protected against violent johns.

"Their plight" makes you sad? Shagging someone for 20 minutes for 80-100 000 so you can get the latest mp3 phone or Gucchi handbag. I have no sympathy at all for these girls, most choose to go on the game. I feel sorry the girls working 2 legit jobs to support themselves and barely breaking even.

I always find it interesting that they find it a sort of revelation that they have come to the same conclusion that many have before. It will bring out the same arguments and same flame wars.

Prostitution in Asia was thoroughly spread out by the Chinese a long long time ago. .

The influx of American soldiers however brought out the sleazier side to it which is what gets most of the media attention. Look at Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. All at some point have had military stationed there or still there now.

And cheap air travel to countries with less than stellar human rights laws.

Prositution is still big business in Malaysia yet you don't see people going over there waving there flags and telling people how it is wrong.

What I would suggest is to get yourself a few of the books that have been written about prostitution in Asia. Don't just buy the books which paint it in a negative light as you will only get one viewpoint.

Books I can remember - Patpong Sisters, No Money No Honey, Private Dancer, Casting Stones: Prostitution and Liberation in Asia and the United States.

Casting Stones: Prostitution and Liberation in Asia and the United States wrote:
Brock and Thistlethwaite note that prostitution and the "sex industry" can be hard to define, since relations of sexual exploitation can be subtle and payment indirect. At the same time, they give ample evidence that organized crime networks of international procurers traffic in huge numbers of young women and children, both within and out of Asia, and within the United States. In Thailand in particular, the poverty of rural families and an ethos encouraging the sacrifice of children for the family's welfare, makes the sale of daughters to urban brothels a desperate but not uncommon measure. Moreover, tour agencies in industrialized countries-Japan, Australia, Europe, North American, Korea-sell excursions to major sex industry centers with few legal restraints. The demand for young children, sometimes toddlers, has been exacerbated in Asia by the AIDS scare.

Hard to define.

Is it disgusting the older men who have second wives. 20 years old or so that they lavish with gifts and have sex with. They are technically having a relationship yet they are being paid for at the same time.

She may just want to be your friend. She may just want somebody to talk with in English. She is after all a human being. Which you have recognised by the comment on the mamasan pushing her onto customers yet you have labelled her as a hooker which in my eyes is objectifying her.

Give her a call. I doubt she wants sex with you. Might cost you dinner to meet her but it will be good for you. Don't ask her how long she has been in the game and why she does it and all the other crappy questions. Just have a chat with her.

You had me up till this point. You've lived in Thai (as I did some 10+ years ago) and seem to have a handle on the subject. Why the value judgement? If this whole phenomenon tells us something it is that sex, love and marriage are still economic arrangements and that simple looks are not sufficient reasons for coupling. As a feminist academic I read in undergrad glowingly stated, the only countries in the world that have erradicated prostitution and concubines are Communist or Religious dictatorships. Fine, the evils of prostitution may be solved, but what of the other lack of freedoms that follow? Put short, freedom of choice and economic disparity lead to people making some choices that others view as 'disgusting'.

I really think you should give her a call--you're in a foreign country, having an adventure...why not add having a juicy girl as a friend onto that list of things to do; she might give you a completely new insight on Korea, ya know?

I went into a juicy bar in Itaewon a year or so ago as part of a friend's bachelor party. We were sitting about with the girls on our laps drinking up the expensive drinks and having a jolly good ol' time. Then I noticed that one of the girls on the other side of the room was freed from her customer and approaching our large table area to join in the fun. She came around the table as I looked up and our eyes met. It was the wierdest feeling...

... "Professor?" she whispered.

Man, did that take the sting out of the evening.

Disgusting was the wrong choice of word there.

I've never taken the plunge and paid for some girl's time, whether its juicy time, massage-e time, short time, whatever. I used to make lots and lots of condemnations for why I was better than people who did.

But now, I've only got two reasons why I don't. The first is "Why would I pay someone to lie to me?" which would be relevant if the girl didn't like me and was just pretending to for cash. But I'm a pretty gregarious guy, what if I ended up winning her over and became her favorite customer? The condemnation wouldn't work anymore then, and I'd only have one more left!

The one more reason I don't go is that after three years I'm starting to get this sneaking, horrible thought about Korea that won't go away. After reading up on what goes on here, noticing all the An-mas, hearing about the juicy girls, seeing the prostitution streets, finding out its 4% of the GDP and 20% of Korean women... I've coupled all that with the fact that while I meet a lot of nice, cute, attractive women, I never seem to meet (or even see!) any complete stammer-inducing stunners, like I used to see in LA or any large city in the US. Where are the women who are completely out of my league and make me lose the ability to speak? At first I thought they just didn't exist here. But now... now I have the sneaking horrible thought that they are all busy prostituting themselves. Like the top 20% of the most beautiful women in this country ALL sleep during the day and work at night.

And I'm not sure if I want confirmation on this theory. So that's the other reason I don't go.

Had a similar situation, except in my hometown. I went to my ten year highschool reunion in 1999 and got drinking with an old schoolmate who had gone on to become a copper down in Sydney after leaving the army. We went on to a lap dancing establishment and he shouted me a ten minute spot with a raven-haired stunner. As she turned around to face me she says, "your name is Aaron, right?". Shocked, I asked her how she knew. "We went to school together", she replied, "I was a few years below you", which would have put her in my sister's grade. The people you meet, huh?

Good, but nothing compared to the old shower show at Carousel in Nana Plaza. Did you ever see that back in the day? I stood up and applauded the first time I saw it!

Is that a temple? I've been to so many temples I can't remember now.
