Just a tangential note for y'all. I had a student who is very light-skinned and really does not look Korean at all. I mentioned it in class and she acted so embarrassed. The hagwon director later told me I should never say to a student they do not look Korean, as it will be very shameful for them. You know how it is with individuality here. Something to keep in mind.

I would have asked, "Why?!"

You should know the answer. Korea is a very conformist type country.
So many men wear the same style of ties, there is almost like a fat police with so many people harassed about their weight, and if you tell someone they don't look Korean then you are saying they don't fit the image of the herd and look like another race; they don't want to stand out.

That's not how I meant it. It was more along the line of: "Is my son any less Korean because of how he looks and should he be ashamed because of it?"

You jest, Sir, but let's face it. Between the U.S. and Japanese soldiers during and after the war, and the sexual relations that we all know go on between Koreans and foreigners today, this is far from a "clean" peninsula, as it were.

Plenty of non-Han genes in the pool.

I wear aqua or green contacts for fun sometimes. My aqua ones, sometimes people think they are my real eyes, and when I tell them they're contacts they seem surprised. People always think I'm eurasian when I wear the eyes, then they say it's not just the contacts but my features too.

I have an aunt with very light yellowish brown eyes. ALmost looks like cat eyes. I wondered how because she's the only relative with non jetblk eyes. But then again, she has more western features, like pointy nose, big eyes. Last time i saw her, she looked white with her lightened brown hair. Maybe she's part Russian??? Way back in the bloodline?

Some of my students will ask me what they look like. I'll just simply say American.

I can't think of any other country that has a diverse mix of races/ethnicities in their population.

Lots of Russians in the Mongol Horde back in the day. That could account for things. Wink

I do know the Turkic tribes had many people with green eyes and light eyes and Caucasian features. I am not sure how that would have ended up mixed in with Korean DNA. However, anything is possible. It would probably more likely to happen among Mongolians than Koreans considering they had contact with Caucasian looking people to the West.

Just a possibility, but the Mongols may have stationed many a Russian troop in these parts. Just speculation, but are you gettin' my drift?
