An 11-year-old girl in my class drew this. I took away her box cutter, her scissors, and her shoelaces. I think she presents a danger to herself and others!
Actually, what a wonderfully morbid drawing for an 11-year-old to draw. I loved it so much I bought the drawing from her for cash. |

It's rather ugly, but does have seriousness to it.
What the heck is it? What is she trying to say? |

I'm sitting here in the dark reading some stuff before I go to bed and I had to look at that drawing. Awesome. I'm gonna have night terrors for the rest of my life.
Seriously though, that is a freaky drawing. Especially for a girl to draw. Either, she's really into Goth or there are some serious issues going on. My first guess would be a sign of abuse. Maybe someone on this board can get you in touch with a child psychologist that could offer some insight. |

Super rage!!
Artistically, it's quite nice. Good shading. The proportions aren't realistic, but they are aesthetic. Nice detail on the eyes. The nose is a little askew, but noses are pretty hard. Much better than the anime princesses I usually see little girls draw. |

That's really not bad. Compared to what's in some of the comic books, it's tame. Think about the stuff you see on TV, then throw in horror movies.
If she draws a picture of another student or a teacher getting their throat slit, then take the box cutter. Artistic expression should not be punished. Would you want her aggression (if that's what it is) to be vented in less-harmless ways? |

The top half of that bear/cub looks very good. By the what does she have written there?
I'm not a psychologist but have you taken her aside and talked to her? If not that may be something you want to do.
I would suggest if you can spare some paper and some crayons, I would ask her do a few more drawings. Tell her to draw whatever she feels. Do this over the span of a week or two. Gather all the drawings up and see if there are any noticeable patterns. If patterns appear you may want to take it up with the co-teacher and/or her parents. |

Wow. Some boys draw some crazy stuff, but not so well usually. Girls almost always draw princesses with big eyes. What's in the person's (or is it a monster) mouth? And why is there the top of a big hand at the bottom, like the bear is standing on it? What's the person swinging? I like the bear holding the fish, I guess being attacked? And "Surprise" ... strange drawing but cool (especially for a youngster).
I wouldn't think too much of it, but ya never know. It is odd for a girl. |

Yeah, the kid's really talented for sure. The tongue with the face on it is intense.
It's disturbing as hell. I don't know what to make of it, really...I'd be worried about her, as kids don't usually start drawing that kind of upsetting thing until they're a little bit older (I think). I'd bet she's quite likely got something bad happening at home.
Definitely she should keep drawing. It looks like she's got some pretty dark ideas flowing around her poor little melon; better she gets them out on paper than by hacking into herself with a boxcutter, like the kids reported in some other thread today.
I have had some really talented young artists over the past couple of years, too, but I've been lucky; they only did funny cartoons of dodos and food poisoning and people being struck by lightning on the golf course...nothing to worry about there!
Good on you for buying the thing off her. Her first commercial sale, I bet! Maybe she can grow up to be the next Munsch. Hopefully happier than he was though. |

Donald Sutherland has a quote in the movie "6 Degrees of Seperation" (he plays an art dealer) about how he wanted to go back to second grade and buy up all their paintings, "Matisses, every one of them." How they have a mastery of color and composition that they lose by third grade. He even goes to a classroom and asks the teacher what her secret is, how she can get her kids to produce such masterpieces. And she says something like, I let them paint what they want, and I know when to tell them to stop.
I suggest you give your student some colors, and see what she does with them. Otherwise, keep her on with pencil sketches. Would definitely like to see more. |

"Surprise"
Hmmm, just curious OP...any of the other students jealous that you bought her drawing and not theirs?
Maybe the drawing is about how Koreans kill bears with golf clubs (and not a shot gun this time)?
!shoosh,

Odd, but very impressive. Kid probably has lessons from parents or a professional. Looks like a deranged human throwing a grenade at an innocent bear eating fish and shouting "Surprise!". Man's treatment of nature maybe? MUCH too serious a topic and drawing from an eleven year old girl. Definitely a keeper tho... |
