|
|
Had a question which I think is travel-related:
I'm wondering how long (if at all) I can stay in Korea after my last day of work. I work at a hagwon with an E-2 visa. I've heard that I can stay two weeks after my year contract but I haven't gotten any official word on it.
Does any one know anything about this?
thanks,

I'm going into Seoul Dept Immigration tomorrow to find out myself. My e2 visa expires May 12. My flight to Beijing goes 22 May. |

You have 2 choices.
a) Leave Korea by midnight on the expiry date indicated on your ARC
b) Get an extension. A short extension is possible by showing your ARC, passport and plane ticket. This is FREE.
Failure to leave or extend by the expiry of your ARC WILL result in a fine (usually 100K) and a black mark in your immigration file.

Longer extensions require a fee and sponsor OR
jump out of the country and return on a B1/B2 visa waiver stamp (30 days - 6 months depending on your nationality). |

Thanks for the help guys.
ttompatz, I assume the short extension requires me to present my ARC, passport and plane ticket to the Seoul Immigration Dept.? I also assume the plane ticket I'm presenting is the departure one, to show that I am leaving shortly?
Also, do you know how long the short extension is?
Thanks for your help!
chris_J2, I hope all goes well in Seoul.
peace,

Question 1, yes.
Question 2, sort of yes. A plane ticket out to anywhere will suffice, even just s ticket to Japan and back because you get a tourist stamp on re-entry.
The short, FREE, extension is only until your departure date. The official policy for a short FREE extension is "up to 10 days" BUT I have personally had one for 12 days and I heard (unconfirmed) that some people have had them for up to 30 days (but I wouldn't count on that much generosity from an immigration clerk).
I think it could be SAFE to assume that you can get an extension for up to 14 days. |

Have a look at your ARC (Alien Registration Card). Mine had Uiejeongbu on it, in English, & a phone number bottom right corner. I rang it, & got a "press 7 for English" message. Previous posts are right. A final extension before the expiry date was free, unless you are extending your contract, which I am not. Then it's 30,000 won & more paperwork required.
There were several ticket counters at Uiejeongbu. You want the S.O.F.A. counter. While you wait (grab a ticket like in the banks) fill out the form requesting an extension.
You will need:
* Passport
* ARC Card
* Flight ticket or proof of a booking. (I don't pick up my flight ticket until May 15, but I rang my travel agent on my cellphone, & they faxed the required details through to Uiejeongbu Immigration Office).
Now all have to do is pack! |
