These days I am working with Powerpoint/Mp3s/gif/jpeg/image,sound, video processors and other applications for use in the classroom lessons using multimedia for kindergarten ages.

For example I made a ppt with intro slides then a slide that starts 'Old MacDonald' song and with each click runs through the song showing words and animals appearing and shining (bells and whistles etc) as fitting the progression of the song. There are 24 seperate slides with that. Each with various iamges and events themselves.
Another is a pets' sound ppt which uses animal noises I captured and sound edited and children guess the animal that makes the sound. The animal appears on the next slide. There are 10 animals on that.

I was wondering if anyone else makes this sort of thing, or if you can share ideas. I need refreshing ideas. Different ways to use the software for different effects and different themes.

I'm a freelancer. I've been told I should chant and use flashcards like other teachers. That's okay, too. I do that. But, I want to have multimedia classes, too. And, I've got a years program to fill up. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and desperately try to trhow a lesson together. It's stressful. So, if you want to share ideas, or work together on a project, I'm ears up.
For example, I can work on a video sample (avi, mpeg, whatever, maybe even vcr tape) and sound project for you if you can introduce me to the video you have.

Here's an example of what kind of stuff I do....much like your ppt.

http://www.esnips.com/doc/8e02eb57-3595-49c2-a14f-e45106e63113/We-are-the-world-Michael-J.-and-friends

Esnips is good/quick. To download videos, you'll have to register with a quick password/email address.

But I am into games more these days as well as producing video karaoke as well as the ordinary stuff.

What you say about sharing is true but I don't call people on it. To each their own. Some like us, like to create, share and others have other things. But we each do our best, in our own way.

Multimedia isn't just good because of the motivating factors or the learning paradigm.....what it really exemplifies is the revolutionary concept of taking the learning outside of the classroom or atleast, allowing students access to ALL the teachers materials. So they can review, rewind, regurgitate, reinvent, reuse ....... The teacher is no longer a magician with a bag of tricks....

I send many many students to my site. Those that use it -- great. Those that don't - that's okay. But it is there and a tool. ....

Could you be a bit more specific?

Where do you work? What age group do you teach?

I teach at an elementary school grades 3-6 formally and grades 1 & 2 most singing and whatnot so a lot of my files are geared to work with the book or to supplement it. I'd be more than happy to share my pittance through pms or e-mails...

I hope things work out for you....

But, unfortunately that's how it is with me. The kids are so young, not yet in elementary, so it does seem like I'm pulling out tricks as the work I've done so far is just a different way of presenting information. There is no sense of online learning. I'd love to take it a step further so kids can manipulate the material themselves during class. But, I'm not sure how to accomplish that.

I do 8 * 15-20 minute classes per day from room to room. Self-employed with a Korean kindergarten. As you can imagine moving class to class means I can't really set up internet. It's gotta be on the hard drive, you know.

Use a widescreen notebook with plugged in amp and speaker.

I like games and movement activities but the classrooms are really congested so it's seated or stand, rather than moving around.
That's what gave the idea to use ppt as well as traditionals like video and CD. I think of powerpoint as movable talking flashcards. And, it's a great medium for presenting segments of video and sound with inserts and breaks etc where you want them.

I'm very interested in seeing your songs Alyallen. Did you improve them in some way? What kind of files are they? Me too ready to share. Some of the files can be large though. So I'd have to condense but make sure in a format other users could use due to codec issues. I guess the main MS$ ones suffice. But, this is where aforeknowledge and collaboration does count.

I could put the song on that ddeubel. Or cut it, manipulate it, slow it without changing the pitch, add tracks, anyway you like. And, compress the main file to a quarter the size.
(About the song, MJ wouldn't appreciate it being uploaded.) I reckon Ole MacD would be fine, so thanks for the intro to Esnips. 5GB!

Cheonmunka,

The song is in the file. Just click the first slide after it loads. .wav files are contained and compressed in the ppt. Only way you can do it without the upgrade and cumbersome powerbullet. Otherwise people have to download both the song and ppt and then insert and keep in the same file. So with all my ppts, just click on the first slide and the music starts. You might have to set the slide transition/timing again by using the arrow keys to cue....

Do you have a computer lab? Most schools have one that is under utilized. Actually many schools have 2, one used a lot and one just for show. Try to get its use and show sell how it will help kids learning. www.englishspace.ort.org just got back online. A live network where kids go through a space ship, traveling and completing language activities. You can also have them doing other activities while you pull them aside in groups and do some real teaching/conversation. This is the future of language learning/instruction. NOT what happens now, however the good attempts we make.

As for sharing, as I mentioned esnips offers its 5 gb. If you sign in, you can also download all the hundreds of teaching videos I've made/uploaded. Leveled readers, subtitled clips/shorts, series, video karaoke etc...... Without signing in (just a short email registration, no names, just give them an email address) you get all the other teaching materials.

You are right about the flashcard comment regarding ppt. I always take a ppt a step further if possible and after whole class, have the students in pairs and groups, practice the same way. I have a short article "HOw to make a powerpoint POWERFUL" in my presentation folder which outlines the many ways you in class can use a ppt so more kids are talking. AND, all powerpoints can be printed into flashcards. Just chose print preview, chose 6 slides / page, print and cut and give to the students for use in pairs as flashcard material for game.

Let me know more about what you are making. Try some of my karafun karaoke. Great tool and you can make your own karaoke's with it. Or try your hand at putting subtitles on music videos. That's trickier and more time consuming but it can be done....

Thought I'd share this problem I had recently.

I worked very hard on scanning and making a powerpoint presentation for my students to read and talk about a fun book. I then put it on a thumb drive and bring it to school. I go to my first class and plug it in, up pops a window that I have to click on and won't let me do anything unless I click on it. So I do, and it blocks everything, so I can't access my work!!

There went all of my hard work. Crying or Very sad
