Any thoughts on the two places.
I want to go somewhere quiet. I don't care about nightlife.
I just somewhere with a nice beach, water deep enough for decent swimming and a few decent places to eat. |

I stayed at aplace on Phangan that was really beautiful and relaxing. There is NOTHING to do though, so just be prepared for that. I wouldn't suggest going alone unless you are a real loner. It was a fmaily run beach bungalow style place. RIght on the beach, coral reef for snorkeling right out in the water about 50 feet, great food at the restaurant, bar for watching sports, and there are a few otehr places (maybe 3) along the same beach. Bucket flush toilets, no hot water, but you don't need that stuff anyway. The only concern is that there aren't a lot of choices for restaurants. Maybe 3 in walking distance. The one that the family runs has a wide variety and is really tasty though. We didn't eat anywhere else for a week. Its on MaeHaad Beach if you can find that on a map. I can find their email if you are interested. |

I like Ko Pha Ngan more than Ko Lanta.
Different options, though.
While I enjoy Ko Pha Ngan more than Lanta, I think Lanta offers more opportunities to island hop on the Andaman side of the penninsula.
What do you want? |

I want to relax, swim in clear water, and eat decent thai food on a relatively quiet beach |

I never went to Lanta, but I had a nice time on Pha Ngan lat summer. I went to a health resort, the Sanctuary, It was nice, good beach, friendly travellers, yoga.
Pha Ngan is much less populated than Samui or Toa, so much nicer in my view. But mostly you will see other foreign travellers, and a few Thai bungallow owners; other Thai don't usually vacation at quite beaches.
It is a beautiful Island. |

Haven't been to either but have been to Ko Samui which was awesome. Beautiful beach and a little nightlife. |

when are you going? If in the summer then Latana is not the place given the SW monsoon. Apparently a lot of places close down then
pha ngan is nice, very quiet if you get away from had rin and the full moon parties
there and samui are ok during the monsoon season as they dont get as much rain as the other coast. prices will soar from late july-late aug as the europeans take their summer vacation |
