Why do those of us who chose to live abroad feel more comfortable abroad? Often we are some of the most patriotic Americans, yet we feel we belong abroad. Why is that? What are your thoughts? By the way, I don't want any non-Americans thoughts on America or our way of life. Only Americans!

Personally, I did it to get away from people like you.

Well, as a naturalised US citizen and holder of 2.5 passports, I'm doing it to help push imperialism AND a secret agenda conspired globally by fellow shooshers (aka the Shoosher Clan of the Clan McShoosh)...but, please, tell nobody of this!

!shoosh,

It's a complex question. I feel comfortable to a point. I've been here over three years, but am getting ready to go home next month. I try to be understanding of Korean culture even though certain aspects drive me nuts (one of them being everything happens at the last minute). I'm not big on Korean food either, which doesn't help. Of course I've always been a picky eater, it certainly isn't just Korean food that I dislike.

As I said in another thread, my mom lived overseas for two and a half years in Sweden. While their culture is a bit closer, it was hard for her at times as well. The nice thing is we will be able to compare stories about our experiences.

Bill Hicks
Quote:
I hate patriotism...I can't stand it. It's a round world last time I checked.

I don't build my identity on where I'm from. I think about people who are territorial about their neighborhood and don't like others from other neighborhoods. They are ignorant and let a location be a base for their identity instead of their own accomplishments. This same mentality exists with people who base their identity on a city, on a university, on a college, on a state or province, and on a country. We all bleed red last time I checked.

Even for those filled with patriotism, patriotism doesn't mean not accepting other cultures. I just happens to be that many "patriots" in the US have never left it to know or love other cultures, and US education does a piss-poor job teaching students about other nations.

I love living abroad because even some countries are just as money-hungry as people in the US, and as vain, I have other cultural experiences and landscapes to distract me from it.

I always laughed at people who were scared to travel or scared of what was unfamilar. Now, I still laugh at them, I just don't have to be around them as much.

I will die happy knowing I not only saw, but lived throughout, the world.

I never felt like I fit in anywhere in the U.S. (I grew up in the Bible Belt and then moved to Berkeley/San Fran), so I think I prefer to live abroad where it's just accepted that I'm a weirdo, and I'm not expected to even try to fit in.

Yeah, the country that you live in is like a person you're forced to hang out with everyday. Sometimes, your personalities don't jibe, so you've got to go hang out with somebody else.

That said, I love America and I'll be back there someday. But first I wanna sleep around with a few other countries.
