Despite the estranged relations between the U.S. and North Korea, Americans will start to see Pyoungyang Soju hitting shelves sometime in the next few months. Has anyone tried this stuff? How expensive will it be in the U.S.?

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korean-made soju liquor is about to go on sale in the United States for the first time despite Washington's trade restrictions with the communist state, a news report said Thursday. |

I've had this brand and another. Conclusion: North Korean soju makes South Korean sojus look like fine single malt whiskeys. It leaves an odd and worrisome chemical aftertaste in your mouth. Let's just say the initial novelty of having found a bottle of the stuff is quickly worn off after your first shot. |

Yeah. The beer is pretty good. Cheers to Kim Jong il for that at least. |

Where did you get it?
They used to sell NK soju at grocery stores in the late 90's (that didn't last long, it's just so bad), but I never saw the beer. |

The only place I've found it is that chain of bars you find everywhere, Wa Bar.
Also I heard it's in Walmart. |

Really? I though Pyongyang Soju was pretty damn nice when I tried it at a place in Deokso.
I found the initial flavour had a pleasant herbal/ginseng almost ginger flavour to it. Even better than that nail-polish remover flavour hit I get from Jinro.
Each to their own I guess. |

If you live in Anyang you can also get it at the gaucho bar near Beomgye Station. |

I bought DPRK beer at HomePlus in Yeong-dungpo, back in early March. It tasted similar to the better Chinese beers like Qingdao or Harbin. Beats any ROK beer. Makes me wanna move there. |

They must have changed the recipe because the herbal flavour it had in the late 90's was more turpentine than ginseng. |

Yeah, that and the hops/rice used to make one bottle of beer/soju could have fed a North Korean for a day. |

I got a pack of North Korean cigarettes and tried one. Disgusting. It didn't even taste like tobacco. Something else. Weird. What are they doing up there?
If that regime ever falls and North Koreans get to taste quality goods they will tear the heads off their communist party liars. |
