This is a short & concise book.
I place it among the greatest we have had handed handed down to us through the ages.
Also, just a side note, i strongly suspect the historical JESUS was familiar with its teachings.
The Dhammapada
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhammapadda
All experience is preceded by mind,
Led by mind,
Made by mind.
Speak or act with a corrupted mind,
And suffering follows
As the wagon wheel follows the hoof of the ox.
All experience is preceded by mind,
Led by mind,
Made by mind.
Speak or act with a peaceful mind,
And happiness follows
Like a never-departing shadow.
The Dhammapada, translated by Gil Fronsdal, August 2005

This is so confusing and demonstrates the limits of language. It actually reinforces the grammatical myth of the universe by using the words 'maker' and 'precedes' as if the universe is a field of dominoes.
"Who made me?" the child that was thought to learn about the universe from a book was conditioned to ask. |

are you sure it's the book, or that excerpt that is confusing?
and, you can learn about the universe from anywhere, can't you? including a book? and including not a book? |

I've always found the best version of the Dhamappada is the original 1881 translation by Max Muller(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Muller):
The Twin Verses
All that we are is the result of what we have thought
It is founded upon our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts
If a man speak or act with evil in his heart, pain follows him
As the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage
All that we are is the result of what we have thought
It is founded upon our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts
If a man speaks or acts with no evil in his heart
Happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him
When you read it to yourself in your head, you just have a sense of the rhythm of the original work, and can sense that Muller went to great efforts to capture the essence of the Pali original.
The modern versions all just sound new-agey and hokey. |

Sounds about right
Still, in a practical sense i'm currently trying to figure out how to get rid of the "SPY" ware which has embedded itself on my comp.
While the Dhammapadda offers a lot with respect to the mental realm, likely not much of a help dealing with this little "problem".
Hmmmmmm ... |

The egoic 'I' is a composite of thoughts, images. This 'I' is the referential point of our thoughts and images of the world.
But there is another aspect to life that is not conditioned by thought and this is also referred to in spiritual teachings as 'I'. That's where the confusion arises.
That second section was much clearer, still useless info though. |

Muller's translation, at a glance, does seem superior.
Yet, what is evil? |

You might be able to find the entire Muller's translation online somewhere...I only quoted from the first few lines of the first chapter. |

Good question ...
The way i had this explained to me by a Buddhist friend was that Christians tend to see the world & its various manifestations in terms of black & white ( GOOD & evil )
From the Buddhist standpoint it is more accurately a question of CLARITY (GOOD) and CONFUSION (bad-"evil").
If you examine virtually any situation where suffering & discord is present, you will see how confusion arises from & is fuelled by the 3 poisons of HATRED, ignorance & greed.
Hope this helps,
METTA! |
