All people in the military have to have a high school diploma or a GED. In many cases, we are talking about 18 year old guys who are not from wealthy backgrounds, so some might not be sophisticated. I have found many military guys and girls to be friendly and maybe friendlier than the foreign teachers.

It's not someone's fault that they're not wealthy. I have lot of military friends here because I live near the biggest military base in the country or 2nd biggest, Fort Hood, TX. Lot of these guys are fresh out of highschool or university. Most joined because they are poor and didn't really know what to do after school. The army feeds you for free, free to live in the barracks , free medical, and they give you money for college. And the officers, they are paying back their student loans and/or the army sent them to school so they're paying back the army by serving.

My stepdad came from a very poor family. He had a pretty horrific life growing up without a dad, and supportin his 5 siblings. So the army seemed like a good thing for him, and my friends too. They teach you skills that'll be useful in the civilian job market too. Like I knew one guy that was in communications, he got a very good job with Verizon because of what he learned in the army. My dad is a contractor in I r a q and he learned how to make/fix helicopters and tanks because his experience as a mechanic in the army.

What soldiers hate is when they do something good, no one talks about it in the media most of the time, but when they do something bad it's front page news. Like it seems to me that most people in Korea assume all gi's are bad because of the weirdoes they hear about in Itaewon with the raping and robbing. I'm not saying that there aren't some that act like thugs, but you shouldn't judge them as a whole because of one bad apple.

Plus military people are like the funniest people ever. I think it's because they try not to be depressed and happy. I was with a friend watching him deploy to Iraq. Here I am all about to cry and everything, and his army friends who weren't leaving were making jokes and talking about really funny stuff the whole time. I kinda couldn't believe that here he is about to go to Iraq for a year, and here we are popping jokes and cracking up til the end. It's that whole comradship, and I knew an officer that redid his contract because he likes the comradship and the benefits. Where else would you get those type of benefits and a 20 yr retirement in the civilian world?
