To any Brits, how do I go about getting a check of my criminal record? The Bureau doesn't permit individuals to apply for themselves. I've been asked by an agency to provide one, but it's going to be tricky. Anyone been through this procedure? |

You could try calling your local police force. Usually individuals would not be able to apply for a criminal records check but I have heard that they might issue a letter in cases like yours. Alternatively you could try putting it off and hope the agency forget about it; it's not a legal requirement to have one so they often do unless you look dodgy. |

I think I have to get one done because I'm going to be working in a public elementary school. I thought that it was up to the Korean employers to apply for these checks. |

I've never been asked for a criminal background check by an employer or a recruiter. And I don't know anyone who has. Must be a new thing.
Not that I think it's such a bad thing. A bit more screening should enhance the reputation of ESL teachers in Korea. |

Hello. I have recently done a criminal records check. It has to be done to work in a public school.
I phoned my main local Police station. They sent me a form called 'Subject Access' via email.
I filled it in, got it signed by a Police officer locally, it has to be signed by somebody in authority e.g. MP, Minister of Religion etc.
It cost 10 by cheque and it takes a maximum of 40 days to be processed.
Call your local Police, get the Subject Access form, fill it in, follow all the instructions, and it takes a maximum of 40 days to be processed. |

When I told my recruiter how difficult it would be they had me sign a paper saying that I promise I have a clean record, will keep it clean in the future, and get the check later.
I've been here for six months and still have not been asked for it.
