what a morning, the Kentucky Derby then this!!! best non-football and college hoops day of the sports year |
It's a good day for sports, but not so much for the events cited. The Wings, Pistons, and Tigers all won today. Now that makes for a great day of sports!

This was the match that was supposed to "save boxing". |

If I had paid $2000 USD to sit at that ringside today I would be PISSED!!! It was horrible. Mayweather looked like he was scared of De La Hoya the whole time! De La Hoya had to literally force the *beep* to fight him. When Mayweather came in as the winner my hubby and I were shocked.
I wanted to Mayweather to win, but win with a good fight. That game was rigged I tell ya! |

Umm, I am shocked.. how would you think DLH would win? Run around throw more punches, but land less and that constitutes a win??

| When boxing is bad, it's REALLY bad. A flat-footed semi-retired DLH against a cautious, safety first PBF throwing one off shots from the outside, refusing to plant his feet and throw down. It was pretty much what a lot of insiders expected. This was always going to be an own-goal for the sport. |

I barely saw Mayweather land any solid punches on DLH that's why I was shocked. It looked to me like DLH got in all the good jabs. I guess not being ringside didn't allow us to see everything. |

Then maybe you should put your glasses on and re-watch the fight.. mayweather was landing at around a 40% connect percentage.. |

When fighting for a title, the challenger must convincingly TAKE it from the champ....I didn't see that happen.
Only thing I can think of...If de la hoya had won (as he should have) there would be less likelyhood of a re-match.
All in all...a lot of hype; maybe the re-match will actually be better.

I know enough to see that DLA should have won that fight. I think most people would agree. Maybe you're the one who doesn't know. |

I didn't watch the fight (other than excerpts on ESPN...) but the fact that Mayweather landed more - and a higher percentage of - his punches doesn't necessarily indicate that he should have won.
Unlike amateur boxing, the judging criteria for professional fights gives priority to the effectiveness of the punches. This reply on "Yahoo Answers" briefly sums it up how to score a pro fight:
1. Clean, hard punches
2. Effective agression
3. Defense
4. Ring Generalship
IN THAT ORDER.
In other words a guy that showed effective aggression, good defense, and ring generalship in the same round that he got his clock cleaned with more clean, hard punches, mean he should still lose the round.
One power punch that visibly rocks an opponent may be worth more than three or four light punches landed ...
It's rare to find championship fights in this era of boxing that compare with great bouts of the past in terms of exciting action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYHSHd1xfpY (Marvin Hagler - Thomas "Hitman" Hearns ...)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M39xb9Slp2g (Aaron Pryor - Alexis Arguello ...)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDUpyUAUi9g&NR=1 (Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini - Bobby Chacon ...)
(Of course, while Mancini's fights were usually exciting slugfests, sometimes serious injuries and even death resulted - Chacon ended up like a vegetable; while South Korean Duk Su Kim died shortly after his title shot...)

Unlike amateur boxing, the judging criteria for professional fights gives priority to the effectiveness of the punches. This reply on "Yahoo Answers" briefly sums it up how to score a pro fight:
1. Clean, hard punches - PBF - as named by punchstat
2. Effective agression - DLH was aggressive yes, but not effective.. he just chased PBF around the ring and tried to trap him (unsuccessfully)
3. Defense - PBF's defense was clearly better, most punches hit his gloves and or shoulders.. or in the exchanges on the ropes where DLH was swinging wildly weren't even scoring blows cause if you look he was just slapping with the sides of his gloves.. not the knuckle part (which are scoring blows)
4. Ring Generalship - whose fight did they fight? PBF's plan ~ stay in the middle of the ring... DLH's plan ~ get PBF on the ropes and punish him.. 90% of the fight was in the center with PBF using his greater speed to pot shot him.. Don't believe the hype of the crowd and the HBO announcers.
IN THAT ORDER.
In other words a guy that showed effective aggression, good defense, and ring generalship in the same round that he got his clock cleaned with more clean, hard punches, mean he should still lose the round.

So I am glad you agree now that PBF won |
