The short answer it doesn't exist in Korea "yet".. You can get the international atm cards.. but not the check cards yet. I spent all day trying to find one with the help of my Korean girlfriend and her brother.
she mentioned that they would be coming, but didn't give an date as to when. |

What are you guys talking about? My KEB credit card has worked in at least half a dozen countries. Hasn't been denied yet. |

Perhaps they are talking about a debit card rather than a credit card..... |

My credit card has worked overseas as well.
Are these guys talking about debit cards? If so... mine works overseas also. |

A check card is often considered similar to or the same as a debit card. I don't wish to have a credit card. |

I think I know where everyone is getting messed up on this.. and it all has to do with the terminology... in Korea a check card is a debit card.. and a debit card is a cash card. so a check card in Korea will give you the ability to purchase things in Korea. A debit card lets you get cash out of an atm.
To us foreigners a check card/debit card as we know it does not work overseas. they do not have a contract/agreement through visa or master card yet..
So your debit card that works overseas is just a regular atm card. none of the banks I called could you use a debit card like in America where you could purchase things like a credit card but it comes out of your bank account.
I hope it helps some. |

nonghyup check card. Works just like a credit card except money comes out of your account, just like a back home debit card. Says check card right on it. |

I got a check card from them today. But it's a Cirrus/Maestro/BC Card. Trying to remember how prevalent those kind of ATMs are back home... |

As far as I know, Foreign nationals can only get credit cards if, 1. You are a land owner in Korea, 2. You work for a company, any sort of business which supports an other than e-2 visa, or 3. Work for a public school that requires you to pay korean taxes.s |
