Does anyone get the feeling this summer is going to be a hot one? This weekend felt unusally warm for this time of year which has got me wondering what kind of summer we're in for. What happened to spring? Where did it go? Koreans love to harp on about how they have four seasons here, but all I've experienced in the past two years is a long, dark, frost-bitten winter followed by a long, hot, sweaty summer.

True, it's never comfy here. You either burn up or freeze to death, and then you have a wet month or two during the monsoon season, and all that rain makes it cold. Yuck!

I foolishly left the protective smog of Seoul this weekend and came back sunburned to the point of looking like a lobster.

Since that was May 5th, I figure the summer may just be hellish this year.

As the wise man once said, "Don't believe the hype." Both spring and fall here are about two weeks long. Maybe a month on a good year.

I think the last two winters have been ending progressively earlier each year, and last summer was more unbearable than usual.

I was not here last summer, but one of my Korean friends messaged me saying how last summer's monsoon sucked, and how everything was so uncomfy, wet and cold. I hope we bypass that this summer.

I stopped wearing suits as of today till the end of September. I will however, wear a blazer till the end of June, but only in the early mornings and evenings. I only wear short sleeve button down shirts to the office during the summer.

I was just reminded of an Al Pachino movie. Dog day afternoon.

Quote:
In the summer time when the weather is high
You can strech right up and touch the sky,
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind.
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find.
If her Daddy's rich, take her out for a meal,
If her Daddy's poor, just do what you feel.
Scoot along the lake, do a town an' then return her twenty five.
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good and really fine.

With a fat beat, when her Daddy with a me,
We'll have everybody, but we do as we please.
When the weather's fine, we go fishing or go swimming in the sea,
We're always happy,
Long's we're living in this sound philosophy.

Sing along with us, dee dee dee dee dee
Da da da da da, yeah we're hap-pap-py.
Da da da dee da doo dee da dee da dee da da,
Da da da da da, dee da da dee da da.

When the wind is here, yeah it's party time,
Bring your bottle waggin' back, 'cuz it will soon be summer time.
And we'll signal a cab, we'll go driving or maybe we'll settle down,
If she's rich, if she's nice, bring your friends and we'll all go into town.

In the summer time when the weather is high
You can chase right up and touch the sky,
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind.
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find.

If her Daddy's rich, take her out for a meal,
If her Daddy's poor, just do what you feel.
Speed down the lane, eventhough the speeding limit's twenty-five.
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good and really fine.

With a fat beat, when her Daddy with a me,
We'll have everybody, but we do as we please.
When the weather's fine, we go fishing or go swimming in the sea,

"Korea has four seasons"... my achin' ass. It has two seasons and two brief transitional periods that are a poor excuse for either spring or fall. Break out the shorts and sandals kids... sweat-season is here.

Back in Virginia, I'm used to 36-38C summers, with heat indexes hitting around 40C. The humidity there is so thick its hard to breathe.

How's the Korean summer gonna compare?

It'll be a breeze for you. It's humid here but usually cooler than that. Also, it's cooler (a bit) during the rainy season which could last 3 weeks or 6 weeks.

Gee. What part of Korea are you in?
We've had lovely Spring weather here near Busan for the past month, cool mornings, warm sunny days.
This morning's walk to work was particularly nice.

The weather in Korea is fantastic, especially in Busan! Summer lasts til Christmas, it hardly ever rains, except in the rainy season, and winter is not cold AT ALL. Not AT ALL. The summer is hot, sure, but it's not Thailand hot. It's normal summer hot.

Try living in Chicago, or anywhere in the US Midwest. Then you'll appreciate the weather here a lot more.

It was 27 C and humid here near the southern coast yesterday, requiring the air conditioner at work.
