When my dad was stationed i n Korea, he had lot of these stories to tell me. I thought he was exaggerating that Koreans are the worst drivers. I still remember him telling me this story. That Koreans have the "me first" attitude, and everytime he pretends to be a Korean pushing through people to get onto the bus, or subway first, I crack up. He does it really funny. Anyways, this is gross. As I was laughing, he said it's not funny, what he's about to tell me.

He was saying how the Koreans at a bus stop, were all swarming and pushing eachother with that "me first" attitude. One of the girls got too close, that when the bus finally stopped, part of her leg got caught and was totally torn off, he watched her bleed to death. THat really grossed me out,and couldn't understand why people would get that close to a moving vehicle. I felt my dad was anti Korean. But maybe he was in areas where it's too crowded.

In Korea, no, I haven't.

As a journalist in Canada, yeah I have. A teenager hung himself by a rope from a pier, a car accident victim went halfway through the windshield, a traveller slipped off a cliff onto the coastal rocks far below, an aboriginal elder died and was given a ritual ceremony, I could go on.

Not to nitpick VI but Otis has a thread on general dead people here:

I'm quite lucky in my life to have not witnessed tragedy or unpleasant death.

Anyone else?

I was riding in a taxi, and I saw a dead guy tonight on Youido near the KBS building. A taxi hit him. His bike was about 20 meters in front of the taxi and he was 20 meters behind it splayed out in a discombobulated lump. It was weird because I didnt see anyone near him. The taxi driver was nowhere in sight. My taxi drove by quickly and I saw smashed bike, taxi, and dead guy. I didnt get a chance to look again. I felt mortal for about 20 minutes, but now I'm back to invincible.

Bummer. Im sure someone will miss him. RIP

In 1990 I saw a dead KPA soldier who floated down the Imjim and was subsequently repatriated through the JSA.

My unit at that time was the UNCSF-JSF Co. 1st Plt. Animals.

In 2005, a co-worker hung himself. Didn't actually SEE the body except covered in a sheet.

in changwon , i saw a cat get hit by a taxi. had its back broken and the poor soul tried to scramble to safety under the taxi that hit it. It was pulling itself only by its front legs. It then dragged itself so quickly to the sidewalk... i said a quick prayer for it and kept walking as a crowd of koreans huddled around it Sad

There was a stabbing in Anmin dong (Changwon) outside my hagwon. There is a blood spray trail on the wall, two guys were drunk, one stabbed the other with a sushi knife... no cops were called.. he went to the hospital...

I haven't seen any dead people, but I have seen lots of passed out ajeoshis in full business suits and ties on the sidewalk. The first time I saw this (one Sunday morning during my first week in Korea) I panicked a bit and I turned a guy over to make sure he was alive. He was not dead. He woke up and started yelling a bunch of bad words and as he struggled to get himself up I ran fast and far.

A friend of mine was hiking in the mountains here and came across some older guy who died in the woods, apparently while hiking.

I think I saw one yesterday while coming from Andong to my town. Bongo and a van came together at a highway intersection. Bongos' driver side was crushed (like nearly a meter in) and on its' side. Van was a mess. The windshield had popped right out and there was a big blood splat on one side. I counted six ambulances. They were attending to at least four people, but ignoring one fellow on the ground on the far side of the scene from my vantage point. Guessing he died.

This was when I was stationed at Cp. Stanley...
We were going from our barracks to the lower part of the base when we noticed a person lying, kinda' peacefully, on the side of the road with their hands placed on their stomach as if sleeping. We just thought it was a drunk just taking a breather before continuing his trek. But a few hours later, he was still there and there was a faint smell coming from that direction. It wasn't until nightfall that we got the word that the man we saw was in fact dead.
I think nowadays Korea came along way from just leaving their dead on the side of the road for the police or others to pick up.

If you want to know where it happened, it was at a place called "Baet Bal-ri"

1. Old man, fell down the stairs at a subway station. Observed on the way to work in the morning. Inquired later and found out he died.

2. A while back, elderly man buying cigarettes from a vending machine, seemed to start having a seizure/stroke/heart attack. Fell backwards onto the sidewalk. I pondered helping, but this is Korea, so I stood there thinking about it for a while more. Then a younger Korean guy walked up to the man, looked at him laying there, and took the cigarettes. Possibly dead, not sure.

3. Younger guy, maybe aged 25-28, laying face up in the subway station, eyes rolled back, early evening time before the heavy drinking starts (for most). Obviously dead as he was being covered up and swarms of people were standing around saying nothing. Don't think it was an assault, just a random person, dropping dead in a random place, at what seemed like an early age.

9 months in, 2 maybe 3 dead bodies and counting.

Another victim of delayed fan death.
