Well then just resign. Nothing wrong with that either. It's not like severence pay is a fortune. No biggie. |
Yes, I already did. Yes, I know that severence pay is not a fortune.
Yes, I know it is no big deal. There will be someone to take my place.

An asshat? Why? For having an opinion? For saying how I see it? Because I don't jump on the liberal bandwagon? Check yourself, brother.
No. I am not going to go out and take revenge. That servers no purpose, nor will it get me anywhere.
What is the old Chinese saying about revenge?
something, something, blah, blah......................."Bring two shovels.
Nope.

Probably because when anyone has a differing opinion you just resort to name calling.

Good job on that. To be honest, I believe that you really tried hard preparing your lessons and wanted to do well for your students but got put in a not so ideal condition. Unfortunately you reacted poorly (mistakes happen) and even more unfortunate is that you said you would react in the same manner again.
You seem to have some positives about you but those negatives shout much louder. |

dmbfan -- I think you made the right decision. Leave early and cleanly as possible.
If you're in a really unhappy situation whether it be for personal or professional reasons -- and it certainly sounds like it -- its seriously not worth wrecking your head over. The money is not that much, and if the experience ever was meaningful, it's done, past tense. It's time to go. |

Wow, I am truly amazed at how this gets more complicated.
Well, as ya'll know, after this change of schedule by the school, I did exactly what most of the Korean teachers did. I showed them the same enthusiasm and courtesy that they showed me. Apparetnly, they don't like that very much.
I did hand in my resignation last Thursday. On Friday, the principle send me a note, asking me to reconsider, and that my reasons were not proper because they had changed the schedule, taken my classes from me, and tried to make me the white monkey (According to the contract, they were supposed to provide a co-teacher all along, and they tried to say "Uh.....you are assistant to the home room teachers. I said, "No. 22, different korean teachers is not a co-teacher) Anyway, quite a few K-teachers did not hask me to do anything, it often times it was rather humorous watching them (even using a few of my ideas.....what gratitude). I thought about it all weekend, and was not set. Today, I came to work, and I typed up a response to his letter...just to see how I felt about it. The respnse was basically honest, no insults, but saying things I am not sure he heard about......as that happens all of the time.
About 30 minutes ago, I get a letter asking for me to resign.
Although, instead of the reason I said in my orginal letter (which concerned the problems BEFORE they did this immediate switch of classroom control), they want me to say "personal affairs" is the reason.
What is going on? It is obvious that someone had a complete change of heart, but that is not what bothers me. Why go through all of this?
So, I modified what I typed up today, stating that my resignation stands (for "personal affairs and cultural differences"). But, they needed the orignal form.............yeah, so they can discard what I wrote. So, I said "Ok, I'll ADD your from to mine, staple them together, numbering the pages, etc". And, I mentioned that it would be good if the principle signed it so that there are no misunderstandings.
Oh well.....In 60 days I'll gone from the Land of the Morning suck. |

future employment in Korea?
.........hmmm....bad beer, unproductive coteachers, people who are basically not willing to learn, being viewed as subhuman, putting up with apologists, putting up with rookies who bitch after being here a month, xenophobia, racism, hearing about something bad happening to an English teacher every time I turn the corner, grammar nazis, foreigners who think they are hot shite (and they are most definately not), kids saying "Hiyeeeeeee", hearing the word "Englishee", an outdated culture, and the genuine feeling of not making a difference....................
..........No.....I don't think I'll be back. |

Can you post the name and location of this great public school? After you've left the country of course. |

This is nearly the same list I have on the bad days in Korea, though I bolded the ones that definitely bug me. |

Hmmm....well, I'm not out for blood on this one. And, my reasons are not really directed at the school, but Korea as a whole.
One of the things that I have learned through this experience, is that this seems to the be the norm for public schools. Some people can tolerate it, and some can't. If I enjoyed being a "no-teacher co-teacher", it woule be a sweet deal. Although, if I enjoyed where I was living things may have been different.
1. Shoebox apartment
2. Surrounded by barking dogs, non stop
3. The horrible stink drain.
Petty, yes. but they do make a difference. I never really jived with the foreign crowed here anyway, and not being sociable can have an effect as well. If I ever come back to Korea, it will be either in the Seoul are, Deagu, or another big city...or close to it. And, I will make sure that I am not teaching in a large public school. Who knows, they say there are good hogwans out there (I was at one), so I would not be opposed to getting back in the trenches for a good school.
Right now, I don't know. I do know a break is in order. I have only been home once since 2003, and that was only for two weeks. So, I could go home in July (when my notice is up.......IF that even pans out), see the family and come back in September, and have a fresh start. I can't rule that out. I still love the job......I'm just burned, bummed and frustrated.

Wow, what a ray of sunshine!
If you learn ONE thing from this board, I hope it's how to spell "definitely." |

Yeah, and I am willing to bet you are so perfect...............get a life. Find something else to do other than searching for spelling errors. People like you are almost as bad as grammar nazis.

All this time, I've been going about this the wrong way. I actually should have been taking my spelling on Dave's very, very sersiuosly. After all, I want to impress the spelling and grammar nazis.
But, wait.......no.......I don't have to do that. However, if I and others don't make mistakes, these folks will not have anything to do with their spare time.
Ok, I'll help you guys out.
