How many can you think of? Yes, we all know how to google, but think of it as a game - how many can you THINK of, right now? We can include noun phrases that hinge off them as well ... yeah, I'm teaching this. Maybe you have taught it in the past, or maybe you willl, so let's help each other. And have fun.
(BTW, it's been my experience that Koreans often learn more formal ways of speech in classrooms, seldom get a chance to practice or get drilled regarding phrasals. As an American, I know this is a detriment, as it makes L2 speakers seem excessively formal, which puts us Yanks off a bit ...)
get started - begin something, like this discussion
get together - to meet by prior arrangement
get (object pronoun) together - arrange for other people to meet (I'd like to get tem together and see what they have to say to each other.")
"get it together" - slang, to indicate arranging a situation in a positve way
get-together - noun, referring to an event where people meet each other, perhaps for the first time, perhaps not.
get up - with no object, refers to waking up from sleep and leaving the bed
"get it up" - slang referring to a male successfully acheiving erection
"get down" - very slang, referring to a desire to party hearty
get over it - stop feeling sad or angry or sick
"get it on" - very slang, usually referring to having sex (q.v., Martvin Gaye)
get away - leave very quickly to avoid something
"make a getaway" - successfully escape
"get the picture" - understand
"get a chance" - find an opportunity
"get real" - stop telling lies, to yourself and to me, too
Add to the list, just out of your head ... like I said, it's just for fun. How many more can you think of, without referring to exterior sources? |

Get it on.
I also like the 3 G's. My friend used it a lot in college with one night stands:
Get up.
Get dressed.
Get the f**k out. |

I always thought Will Smith was talking about Korean food. Whenever we eat rice at a restaurant here, the spousal unit always orders this boiling stew, and I always say : "All right! We're gettin' chiggae with it!"
Dumb joke. Sorry.
Thanks to all you offered help with this. The students came up with some we didn't think of so far, but my notes are in the other room, and I'm a lazy man ... but a few that stick in my mind :
get up : 1) wake up and leave the bed; 2) rise
"get it up" : slang, man getting an erection
get back to : 1) return to a place ; 2) start doing someting you did before but haven't done recently
get across : 1) move something over something else ; 2) communicate (requires an object after, or an object pronoun inserted in the middle)
get with it : concentrate and fit in
get beyond : 1) travel over a boundary; 2) stop thinking about something
get to : upset or annoy
get after : follow or chase
Thanks again, to all who helped with this. I think I can build at least half a follow-up lesson with the stuff you gave me ...
Smiles. |
