It's one of the banner ads here on the board. Anyone heard of this group or is a memeber of the group?

It's $59 for tickets to this thing. I so don't think I'm going....

70 views and no responses. I guess that answers the question. |

Well, Rod Ellis, Rebecca Oxford and Greta Gorsuch are on the bill, so they've got some big names coming. Marc Helgesen is being sponsored by his publisher to come over from Japan.
Some people I know from Turkey are also listed as presenting, but they may not get finding to come. I'm putting some of them up to save them a bit, but that may not be enough. I may end up going for a day just to meet up with some people and to see my friends present, if they can come.
I wonder about this "legally established" business - WTF is that?
I checked out their webpage a bit and saw that they (whoever 'they' is) want to set up an accrediting agency for schools. If that can get off the ground, this may be an interesting idea; I just wonder who is really behind this. |

I'd pay that fee to see Ellis and Oxford -- Ellis cracks me up (I don't know why) and Oxford is a freaking guru in the area of learner autonomy. Helgesen gets on my nerves because every time I see him present I say to myself, "that guy makes me look like an amateur" -- I get the feeling that he's probably one of the best teachers out there and I don't know what to do to get to his level.
But, when it's all said and done, I can't go because grading, studying and prep time are killing me. |

I don't mean any disrespect to the hard working professionals presenting at this conference.
That said, I have to say that asking people to pay $59 bucks represents what I call -- the "commoditization" of knowledge. Powers here and powers there, they have it and we must pay for it.
Don't swallow the pallative. Keep your money and share what you feel/believe and know about teaching. Freely or without designs of a "business model".

So true - there are lots of decent conferences that are free or only charge a nominal fee. Paying $59 for an EFL conference is like paying for porn on the Internet. |

I paid 85,000 to go to KOTESOL last year in October and felt ripped off - only one key speaker but here there are 7 in this event so I will give it a go.

Where -did I miss something. I just go to KOTESOL and pay the obligatory 40,000 membership fee plus entrance fee of 35-45,000 -it varies each year and you pay about 75-85 thou a time (and they stopped the free lunch which used to be [part of the entrance fee!) |

why did you pay the membership fee? you can get in just by paying the entrance fee and most KOTESOL chapters have free open meetings. Just curious. |

HUNH?? Where and why are you paying 75K for Kotesol conferences?
It's 40K for one year membership that's a one time payment. The conferences are 10-20K on average if you're a non-member and about 5K less if you're a member. For example the one this weekend (6/2) was 40K for membership (optional) 15K for non-members and 10K for members. Also since it was an all day conference 930-600 there was free lunch. Not the greatest lunch but free.
The International Conference in October starts at 40K for non-members if you register before walking in to the conference and 60K day of. I don't remember the member fee.
I'm not sure what converences you've been going to you but this is what the last two have been like. |
