When the darkies and the scary people come at you specifically with their nukes, I hope you wont be sitting there clutching your pepper-spray and weeping, "Back off man! If you read Dave's ESL Cafe, you'd know how I was showing everyone online what a badass I am!" because you'll just look dumber than usual.

While Korea isn't as dangerous as Lagos(Nigeria) late at night it can still be a nightmare for foreigners. I think that Coffee Cup is getting at the fact that if one was involved in a fight with Koreans then invariably the police won't be much use to you. In the UK I think I trust the police to be more supportive if I get a beating than in Korea.

During the day time I don't feel in any danger at all. However, when I am downtown Kwangju at night I have experienced numerous problems. On at least 5 occasions in the last year some drunken shite has tried to attack me. It is exacerbated when I am with my Korean girlfriend.

How do so many people have so many problems in this country?

I've been to about 30-35 countries and 48 U.S. States, half of Canada.. and I gotta say Seoul is without doubt the safest I've been anywhere (excluding Japan).. and I've spent many many many nights out and and about drinking at nighttime.. granted Itaewon would be compareable to drinking in naturally in any other country.. but outside of Itaewon.. its the safest place I've ever been in my life..

I just don't get it?

if ya get in a fight then your in trouble. but in 6.5 years here, i've only come close once. I, being intelligent, left the scene and didn't say anything to the idiot that I should've put in the hospital.

I don't know anyone who has been assaulted or felt that they were in physical danger. I think this country is safe. If you get into fights here, you are one of two things

  • stupid
  • extremely unlucky

keep your cool and you can walk away from almost any situation. I would say that about any country.

Speaking of which.. I do feel the 'nervousness' or whatever when you see a bunch of thuggish looking 18-year-olds walking around being badass..

However, I've yet to ever see anything happen with anyone of them that actually resulted in anything.

Just another note.. the older GIs are really interesting to talk with.. the ones that are closer to my own age that is..

Just another thought.. does the military actively teach over and over not to cause any trouble whatsoever.. because I've never met a military guy get in a tangle with anyone.. despite thier 'threatening' appearance or behavior or whatever that image thing is thats happening..

possibly~ i can't say that i've seen many fights here involving GIs. however, some friends of mine were involved in an incident with GIs last weekend and it was entirely started and provoked by them.

as you say though, it's usually the younger and and thus stupider and simmering with testosterone GIs that are the most dangerous.

never seen a gi get into a fight huh? Well the biggest fight to take place when I was living in Wonju was something out of a movie. Basically it was a group of GIs busting up things in this western bar, and everyone was throwing punches and it was a huge mess. But that was one time, and the GIs usually stayed out of trouble.

In Pohang it was alway military starting the fights, but they were marines, does that make a difference?

Actually, I spoke too quick about the army guys.. its just weird, because I've met a handful of post-army guys teaching here.. all of which are pretty cool in themselves.. so I guess I just forgot.

Actually one of my friends once, upset at something completely else bumped into a chair fairly hard knocking it into a GI.. and the GI took him down quick in one quick punch.

Another time I remember being in HongDae and seeing this one Korean girl who I'd met 5-10 before.. definetely a familiar friend. She'd been talking to a few young GI guys.. and one came up to me (when she had her head turned) and told me he'd cut my throat if I continued talking with her. I laughed it off for about 3 seconds until I saw in his eyes he was extremely seriously.. basically I just stepped away slowly.. pretty uncomfortable. (Also, he had like 3-4 guys approach right about at the same time as well).. just kind of weird.
