Hi guys,
Despite the amount of money that our schools were throwing at as to stay we have decided to head home.
That said i've got a few questions:
1) Regarding how we extend our ARCs i found that at the korean immigration website you extend your stay electronically, thats is, you don't have to go to the immigration office and do it. At the moment I've got an official looking piece of paper that says my ARC is extended. Just wondering if anyone done this?
2) Our last day is on the 21st, we head up to seoul that day and leave korea on the 23rd. Regarding our pay, our schools have told us that we would be getting it on the 21st or 22nd. This is obviously not what we want for obvious reasons, while I'm sure the govt would pay us our severence plane ticket back, we are worried that if something goes wrong we would most likely be home and fixing it would be difficult.
Has any had their schools send you their final amount of money after you have left the town/country - how did it go
Has anyone got their school to pay them a few days early so they can
1) confirm the amount of money deposited is correct and
2) wire it home and confirm it got there.
How did you get them to do this - just ask them or did they do it on their own
Any ideas how we can minimize the problems this could raise. i.e. the school just to draw a check in our names?
While it has been a great year, this issue is starting to annoy me as they just don't seem to to understand/get our side of the problem and i can just see something going wrong at the last minute.
Thoughts or opinions would are greatly wanted/needed

Just remember to get your pension sorted out before you go. You need to go to a pension office and show them a few documents (passport, ARC [I think], bank account information for when they send the money back home) and your plane ticket. Once your school gives you your plane tickets, see if you can get a day or afternoon off to take care of your pension. If you don't have a free afternoon, you pretty much need to insist on it, as it's really important that you go to the pension office. There's three pension offices in Gwangju, and the nearest one is in Haenam. I'm not sure which one handles our jurisdiction, so maybe get a Korean to phone them.
List of pension offices in Jeollanam-do: http://wiki.galbijim.com/National_Pension_Offices#Gwangju.2C_and_the_Jeolla_Provinces
edited for clarity.

Short and sweet. If you do NOT have your money in your pocket when
you leave you can almost 100% be guaranteed that you will never see it.
You have no way to fight to get it after you are gone.
Make sure it is in your hand BEFORE lunchtime on your last day or camp
on their doorstep until it is. Ask for it. Insist on it.... don't take a passive
route.

Surely that sort of crap does not happen at public schools |

crap
ok what can i do?
I've asked asked them several times, I've explained to them why we want it a few days early but they just say it will be paid on the 21st and that it is not possible to receive it any earlier.
The best I can do is ask for it is early on the 21st and if it is not there start chucking a stink untill school finishes - again the problem is we are leaving that night to go to seoul.
Is this an unreasonable request - personally i think it is quite rersonable as we are leaving the country and would have little or no recourse if either the money is not there or the wrong amount is.

All the public schools I have been aware of have paid it out on the last
working day of your contract.
You can ask (insist) that it be taken care of by NOON on the last day so
you can take care of the banking BEFORE the close of business. It is NOT
an unreasonable request since you are leaving the country.
Make sure you deal with your National Pension refund BEFORE you leave
if you are from Canada or the US. It takes forever if you try to do it from
home. This is done at the pension office and NOT through your school.
Refund information and forms are at the bottom of this page:

And to receive it while still in Korea- how long does it take for them to process everything and deposit it into your account? |

It is my understanding that you can't get your pension deposited in a domestic account. That's why you have to take a plane ticket with you to the pension office; you prove you are leaving and then they wire the money to your foreign acct. I'm not sure how long the money takes to get there.
So, as soon as you have confirmation of your flight out it would be a good idea to head to the pension office and get things settled. |

hmmm ..... didn't read the pension refund web page I see....
(the date of departure has to be in less than a month from the date of the claim)...
so I would guesstimate that it should be within your last 30 days in Korea..... |

I personally know 2 people that have had their pension refund deposited into a Korean bank account. One took 8 weeks for the funds to be deposited (in 2005) and the other 3 days (in 2007) |

So, if you don't leave the country between contracts you can still collect pension? |
