Crap list. I don't listen to much punk, but can recommend some metal.

For old-school metal, you want Dark Angel, Possessed, Kreator, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Sarcofago.

For good nineties stuff, look into Emperor, Darkthrone, Skyclad, Atheist, Impaled Nazarene, Rotting Christ, Einherjer, early Amorphis (with Impaled and Rotting their new albums are good, too).

For recent stuff, Ensiferum and Finntroll.

Finntroll is the bomb though - best metal these days IMHO. Good drinking music.

I won't recommend any albums here - do a search on http://www.metal-archives.com/ for reviews and see what interests you.

Most of these group's albums can be found on isohunt. 20 minutes to download an album on average I've found - not a lot of seeders.

yeah, i know, most of those bands are awful. what i really want is recommendations!
especially for decent new punk rock i may not have heard.

Cream, Hendrix, Nirvana, Op Ivy, Led Zeppelin, and The Who suck? Where's that crackpipe?

Well, I intended to keep my own opinions vague, but yes, the Who could've died with Hendrix and the world would be no worse off, IMHO. I'd take another 35 years of Jimi over the 35 years of self-indulgent rock-opera shwag that Townshend and co. have done since then. Those dudes eat greased codpiece. I do like a lot of their early stuff, and Kieth Moon was a funny wacky freakshow for sure, but Man! do I ever loathe 'Tommy.'

Even though Jimi may well have started to stink it up himself, had he not done the dirtnap...nothing seals a rep like dying young and leaving a pretty oevre, I suppose.

And yes, I did drop the ball by not putting the Clash on.
Anyways, thanks for the recommendations everybody!

...I saw them in Montreal in the fall of '99. It was rad. They were touring for "Veterans of Disorder", I think. Late RTX rules.

I don't know what this thread is about - punk, metal, rock, guitar-based bands. Anyway...

I used to listen to metal. Who didn't? Bye. Found punk. No new punk in my life. Four bands have kept me going half my life and I don't expect that to change.

And anything by these guys, especially this album:

That having been said,

Funny, but the OP could have saved us a thread if he had just PM'ed Racetraitor, the resident punk expert here.

These days the only punk music I listen to is Korean with a few exceptions. 99% of what I listen to is reggae or ska though.

One of Canada's best bands, maligned as nazis because of some of their songs. Another great Canadian band, probably the best at the moment, is the Wednesday Night Heroes from Edmonton.

dag nasty - their first 2 records are untouchable as far as hardcore and classic '85-'86 "emo" (not 2000s era mall-emo) go. my favorite band. hands down.

fugazi - a no-brainer.

snuff - their first record "snuff said" puts every lame "fast, melodic, poppy snowboard-video ex-hockey-player-bro-punk" band to total shame. flawless from start to finish.

american nightmare - "background music" is fast, passionate and heavy. great lyrics too.

jawbox. all their records rule.

bl'ast "the power of expression" is another favorite.

on the more metal side i'm a huge fan of entombed, especially the "morning star" LP.

i find myself listening to this a lot lately - pentagram are really good classic underground metal. super-crude sounding recording, but heavy riffs and dark lyrics.

and my favorite metal band, TROUBLE are back together. classic band, with sabbathy riffs and a more modern and aggressive feel.

local artists - i like rux, 13 steps, hollow jan, vassline and this metal band i saw at ssamzzie soundfest a while back.

i also second the "husker du, bad brains, turbonegro, QOTSA, germs" recommendations and have to say "where are black flag, dead kennedys, negative approach and DOA?"

i'll probably add more later.

hey uberscheisse Smile
you forgot fucked up, which you not only turned me on to, but in fact made a thread about on this very board not 6 months ago.
that's some good, angry punk rawk music.
locally, i like guk-do, cockrasher, the patients, and galaxy express. galaxy express is especially riff heavy, which i like.
electric eel shock, if you didn't see them last weekend, are a lot of fun. they do a pretty decent cover of iron man, and their original stuff is pretty good too.
i second hanatarash, qotsa, forgotten rebels. all good stuff.
rss Cool

Arrow right now i'm listening to: boredoms - cheeba
