A fresh off the boat newbie at our PUBLIC school gets 2.1 mil for 22 classes of 40 minutes per week and 20k per extra class to a max of 28.

Total time in the classroom is (28 classes * 40 minutes) = 18:40.

Salary for that class load = 2.58 mil per month + benefits...
rent free - unshared apartment,
50/50 medical (and 1.5% is too low for the national plan so you should be careful about YOUR new contract),
pension (50/50 contributions),
airfare,
4 weeks annual holidays + national holidays off with pay
1 month pay on completion of her contract
15 days paid sick leave...

You get to work 21 * 80 minute classes = 28 full hours per week = 10 hours more time in front of your class for 500k less money per month. Couple that with your 2.5 hours per day of required prep time and you are over 40 hours per week in the hakwon for 20% less money.

SLP still = Slave Labor Program.

This isnt quite right. A newbie EPIK teacher gets 1.9; at least in my province.

Otherwise, yeah, dont go to a hakwon, generally...

however, if you cant wait until a Public School job become open and/or you are set on not working in the countryside, the job you described sounds about average.. i think you can find better if you look, though.

SLP = (S)lave (L)abor (P)rogram
You will be overworked
You will be underpaid
They will not honor the provisions of your labor contract

Quote:
2.5 hours a day for preparation

(E)xcessive (L)abor (W)ithout (P)ay {These are unpaid hours. More than one (1) hour of preparation is excessive.}

Quote:
student evaluations

These are written evaluations and you'll do many of them. If they hear their child is doing poorly, they will enroll their child in another school. It will be your fault. Your employer will "spice up" the reports or tell you what you can and can't write. Student evaluations are crap.

Maintenance of the English environment during breaks:

Korean Labor Laws stipulate that you may use your breaks freely. Tell this employer to piss up a rope.

Contract Overview:

2,000,000-2,100,000 is a typical crap salary for soon to be overworked newbie in the lower depths of hell. I would accept less than 2,300,000 Korean Won.

Overtime:

1.2 times regular salary

1.5 and NOT 1.2

Quote:
Airfare: free round-trip airfare

These drug pushers finally did something right.

Quote:
Bonus:

one month salary extra at end of contract (severance - legal requirement)

Severance is calculated as the average of the last three work months salary including overtime wages.

Quote:
Housing: free fully furnished shared or single apartment

SAY NO TO SHARED HOUSING

Quote:
Medical Coverage: 50/50 - estimated cost to you is 1.5% of the monthly salary

Contribution is 4.77% whereas both parties pay 50% of the costs. So, your employer deducts 2.385% from your monthly salary as your contribution. Your employer contributes an equal amount of 2.385%. Contributions are paid by your employer to the National Healthcare Insurance Corporation.

M-F is good. There should be contractual language that clearly defines the days you don't work on.

Walk and seek employment elsewhere. The classes are extremely long.

Pre-school = suicide
