| The answer is simple: Bring back the 10/10 round. I don't know when or why it happened, but judges now are sh*tscared to admit that some rounds are just too close to call. There were more than a few rounds in that fight at the end of which I said "Well, I'd give that to X, but I wouldn't be surprised if a judge or three gave it to Y". If they were instructed to only award rounds when they are taken clearly, there would be far less controversy, and fighters would cut out crap like hanging back for two and a half minutes and then throwing a flurry of punches in the last 30 seconds to "steal the round". |

Even with the old "rounds system" fighters used to try to "steal" rounds with late flurries at the end of rounds. Muhammad Ali was the most notable example - and it was a good pyschological ploy which influenced both fans and judges...
Boxing is more than just mechanical scoring of points . Personality and entertainment value - showmanship - also enter into it (although when done in poor taste it becomes "showboating" - a negative factor that judges will penalize a fighter for...)
A true boxing champion should ideally display noble qualities of a warrior and not act like a crazy jerk or criminal.
De la hoya is more a warrior-type while Mayweather is a consumately skilled technician, but both are personable enough to be positive influences in a very rough business ... |

You can't compare the golden age to what has now become a fringe sport with low credibility. To the few people who do still follow the sweet science, stealing rounds is an eyesore and certainly not the hallmark of a noble warrior.

Yes, there are important factors besides the compubox stats, and it's not uncommon for judges to favour charismatic fighters, though I cannot recall ever seeing a fighter penalized by a judge for showboating.

Agree with you on De La Hoya, but PBF is a poor ambassador for boxing. The press has been dubbing him "Fraud Mayweather" for some time now. If you watch his press conferences and review the run-ins he's had with the law, it's hard to not perceive him as both a crazy jerk and a criminal.
Edit: Just came across this excellent point on Maxboxing.com - "Neither DLH nor PBF have ever beaten a "great" fighter while he was in his prime".

Just based on his appearance on Jay Leno (I saw last night...) he came across pretty well and said the right things (though he was probably coached by PR people from HBO who hope to milk at least a rematch out of it...)
Regarding his relationship with his father, Floyd Sr., he pointed out that he had been incarcerated during much of his youth and that his uncle (Roger Mayweather) had been more of a mentor and positive influence...
Of course, a lot of hip-hop culture is really a commercialization of prison culture, and big corporations like Sony and Time-Warner (and HBO) exploit it, sending out mixed signals (especially to black youth) about crime and "street cred"...
At least he has a nice, big smile he can flash all the way to the bank... |

... Somebody in the throng of reporters around him asked Mayweather, "How much money do you have in your pocket right now?" no doubt a reference to the pound-for-pound champion counting wads of money and throwing $100 bills at the camera in one part of the HBO series. "Like $30,000," responded Mayweather, his diamond-encrusted jewelry gleaming from his finger, wrist and neck. How much is that watch worth? "About $500,000," he says. And the ring? "$200,000." The chain? "About $300,000."
Wearing a million dollars worth of jewelry might seem a bit too much to some, but obviously not to Mayweather. He'll earn at least $10 million for fighting De La Hoya, who'll make at least $25 million plus what his Golden Boy Promotions takes in as fight promoter...http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2007-05-02-mayweather-delahoya_N.htm
Here's a good analysis:
