MUSLIM and Christian leaders in Oslo scrapped a soccer match meant to foster understanding between religions today after the imams refused to play a team that included women priests.
The imams said physical contact with women would be inappropriate, NRK public television said, and the Norwegian Christians refused a proposal of a male-only clash.
The match was to have followed talks meant to build bridges between faiths in Norway.
"Some say that bodily contact is the problem. It leads to special feelings that can lead to something forbidden," imam Senaid Kobilica told NRK public television in explanation.
A woman priest from Norway's Lutheran state church, who was part of the Christian team, said that barring women from the pitch would be discrimination.
"It's disappointing because it means deciding to sacrifice someone from one's own side - women, who historically are those who have had to give way," priest Kjersti Oestland Tveit said.
"It's a setback for sexual equality in 2007."
Her objection prompted the Christian captain to cancel the match.
"There are both men and women priests in Oslo, and you can't have a dialogue in which everyone can take part and then have a game where only men are allowed," Trond Bakkevig said. |

"Interfaith" understanding is quite hard when you have to adopt the other faith as a foundation for any discussion.
If you want to have an interfaith soccer game, do not bring women. |

I didn't know that a "Football match" was a right wing religious event. Guess we have to tell the Brit's that! They would be most surprised!
_____
Why did the Imams' make a religious issue out of a soccer match?
Or, is it that they distain woman so much, that they refused to interact with them on the same level?
Would be hard for the women to play in a jilbab, eh? |

Maybe it was the after match bath and shower that freaked them out.
Anyway, I think they understand each other now. |

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything official in Catholic doctrine that would preclude men and women playing soccer together. I believe that RSR is correct about Orthodox Jews, though. At least certain sects of them. |

There are now female Catholics playing soccer with male Catholics.

Frankly, I might have a problem playing soccer with females in a way, because I would be concerned concerning how some people play in a rough way and an injured female injured by a male engaging in a reckless play wouldn't be a pleasant sight for the other players. However, I am not really against it in principle. However, these imams didn't object for that reason. It was religious, not out of concern for the safety of the females. |

Point taken. But I think the Imams were objecting to the presence of women qua women on the team, not female priests specifically. And I understood(or perhaps misunderstood) you as suggesting that Catholics would have the same objection as the Muslims. |
