OK, Im not homphobic, but that commercial gives me a bad feeling... Do the Korean advertising people who created that commercial/used that actor(ress?) actually think its going to sell more lemonade? |

Obviously "Korean advertising people" have a bit of a better idea of what appeals to their target audience than you do. Should they have a big beefy white guy dressed in flannel chugging down the lemonade and emitting hearty burps as he does so? Would that be better? More pleasing to you?
I agree with princess, get over it. |

Are you like a gay guy? I'm sure he's very appealing to gay audiences, and I'm sure there are lots of those(hidden). So yeah I guess it does sell. |

You don't expect to see commercials here with a Korean guy wearing a ten gallon cowboy hat and Wrangler hick jeans, driving a big old truck drinking his lemonade and pounding his chest do you? You're in the wrong country if this si what you want to see. Corporal is right. The target audience is what this commercial is geared towards. That is not western barbarian guys. Sorry. |

That's a guy!? I need to go shower...
Just kidding, both my fiancee and I scratch our heads when we see the commercial. By the way, does anyone else get these commercial jingles stuck in their head and walk around work saying them...beauty credit, skin f(p)ood, rush cash... |

And thus the ultimate paradox of Korea is revealed: you have young Korean guys running around that look like WHAM! members with malnutrition, and right next to them you have the neanderthal ajjeoshi grunting and spiiting on moving cars because they make him think of boulders with wheels. Welcome to the world that is Korea. |

This all makes me wonder... what do Korean girls like?
I think the younger more immature girls (middle schoolers) seem to be having fantasies about these flamboyantly feminine Korean guys. A couple of months back I noticed a bunch of middle school girls watching TV, and they were INTENSELY interested in a music video with those guys in the teddy bear outfits... the girls were going off about how "gyupdta" those guys were... I kept thinking "how could anyone do that for money?" I'd equate that with the Sunkist commercial. But right now the little girls love that stuff. It's the preteen audience these flamboyantly feminine "gay?" advertisements and music videos are targeting.
However, most older (over the age of 24 or so) Korean women I've talked to are quite into someone they call "Socco Pield" which actually refers to "Scofield" which then translates into "Michael Scofield," from the TV show Prison Break. In fact, they have a crazy lusty look in their eyes when they talk about him. (I'm sure any guy here who talks with Korean girls recently has heard "socco pield" mentioned). I've been told by a friend of my girlfriend to get my head shaved so I look more like him... hmmmm.
Socco Pield, a white somewhat muscular guy with tattoos all over him. Not exactly a macho brute, just a real man. His character is a smart, intelligent guy who views family as very important, yet has a "bad" look even he's truly a nice guy inside. Korean girls DIG that... (errr,... if you wanna score with the women here, do what he's doing, NOT the sunkist commercial guy).
So I'd refrain from saying Korean women are into these "feminine" type guys. It's just the little middle school girls who are decades away from ever really figuring out their sexuality. And THAT is the target audience right there for ya... for some reason, the little girls LOVE these feminine girly guys. And they'll buy stuff they promote...
Yeah, when I saw that commercial, I definitely wondered how that would fare in North America! Heheh... |

Yeah, right... I agree... the commercial is probably geared towards middle school girls or those with as much maturity/experience (not naming any name cough cough-ess). I dont think its a mainstream thing in Korea for women to like affeminate-looking guys; seems like its mostly the opposite. They want like the rebellious, bad-but-good guy... You know what's funny is they DIG Jimmy Dean and "Rebel Without a Cause"... he's like the epitome of the perfect guy for every Korean woman of this generation. |

My gay friend (not Korean) thought that he was totally GAY...And not in a good way....
Interestingly enough, he did like Pi until I showed him some commercials on youtube. He then asked, "what is wrong with Korean women?!"
Just thought I'd share his opinion. |

I love the logic...
We rag on the guy for being a complete queer, and somehow that means we want a big rugged dude wearing plaid.... and the burping part?! Come on now, we didn't say we wanted normal Korean men?
Did we say that's what we expect? No. But of course the local insecure fools get all defensive.... it's so funny to watch. You always know the same 2 posters are gonna run crying when we, rightly, make fun of super queer looking folk.
Now, if the OP somehow went on about this Sunkist guy being a representative of all Korean men, then you're free to get all hissy and defensive. But come on, how can you NOT expect that guy to be made fun of? |
