Ok so I have an interview next week in Los Angeles with the EPIK program, which I think I may end up in the Chungnam province. Or, I could go to Suwon through a different route.
What is Chungnam like? How far is it from Seoul? And I see it borders the ocean, any good beaches?
Or, would you go for Suwon instead?
Thanks. |

Suwon is a city, so it is easy research your living situation. For example, you know you will be on a subway line. You know the population, and so on. I think Suwon is a nice city, but I've only been once for one day.
Chungnam is a province, so you know less about where you will end up. There are a few Chungnam cities on the subway line to Seoul, but not many. On the other hand, Chungnam public schools usually pay better than Gyeongi (Suwon is Gyeongi province).
If it is very important to have access to the Big City, Suwon is probably a better choice. If you don't care about that, and want the bigger paycheck, Chungnam might be better. Hard to say without knowing more about what you want. |

Chungnam this, Chungnam that. I keep hearing about this magical yet mythical place, but I can't find any refrence to it in my Korean guide book.
Can anyone enlighten me? |

I have lived in both Suwon and Chungnam. A much happier time in Suwon. In Chungnam, you will be living in a small town or a small city. Even Cheonan isn't really that big. Some people like that, but for me it was a very isolated existence. Suwon is a fairly big city connected to Seoul by subway. You will have access to a lot of things and facilities that would be hard to come by out in the stix.

Chungnam is an abbreviation of Chungcheongnam-do, which is the province located between Gyeonggi-do and Jeollabuk-do. The Lonely Planet for Korea has an entire chapter on it, although Lonely Planet mistakenly includes the city of Daejeon in the province which is technically inaccurate. Daejeon is one of 7 independent cities in Korea which are not part of any province. |

Thanks everyone for the advice. I love beach cities, but I guess in Korea beach cities aren't exactly the happenin place. Also provincial accents drive me nuts. Maybe better to visit rather then live. I'm still going to go to the interview, but perhaps I am better off living closer to Seoul. |

I'm afraid Chungnam is a bit lame. I've been here for about 7 months. Previously in Jeollabukdo. The latter wins. |
